I Want My MP3 - Velvet Underground Live 1

Posted over 4 years ago

The Velvet Underground with Nico in Columbus, Ohio on November 4, 1966. (And some people reckon nothing happens in Columbus.)

It was a toss-up on which track to post but I settled on "Femme Fatale" for the verve with which the band support Nico's wonderful monotone. Judging by the applause at the end, the patrons of Columbus had some trouble digging the VU. As a reward the band played "The Nothing Song", which goes on for 29 minutes!Check the description of Nico on the poster: "pop-girl of 1966!"

  6. soulrocket says i believe vu were labeld back then as an arty band along the makes of andy warhol & they didnt get the proper recognition after they were gone & lou made it big. that would explain the lack of enthusiasm. probably too much for the ohio state.

  7. Jonh Ingham says I'm not that deep on VU history, but from what I remember they went on tour with no kind of buzz around them. It's likely that the people attending that night were there for a show, any show. And get songs full of whips and 'shiny shiny leather'. I wonder how big the audience was? It sounds like 10 or less.

  10. Jonh Ingham says Rawk - Yeah that poster's a good one, isn't it? I don't own it but I've tracked it a few times on E-Bay. Unfortunately it's (1) rare and therefore (2) out of my price range. I have about a dozen Fillmore and Avalon posters tho.

  11. contrabandwidth says Ah yes Jonh, good post indeed! Let's not forget one of the greatest influences to New York Punk came out of Cleveland, Ohio - Rocket From The Tombs. I know Cleveland isn't too close, but we can thank concerts like this for breeding bands like RFTT. For those of you who don't know RFTT was one of the greatest bands never to lay down an album (until recently). They went on to form the bands The Dead Boys (with some of the RFTT songs) and Pere Ubu (which was pretty much just Dave Thomas from that group. So good things do come out of Ohio, Blair :).

  13. Spike says Did Wes Wilson design the poster? He was one of the best of that bunch. I remember reading somewhere that back in the day the Fillmore people would drive up College Avenue in Berkeley putting up posters, then drive back down and notice that many of the posters had already disappeared into people's collections. The poster mentions The Plastic Inevitable. That means that the light show consisted of numerous simultaneous Warhol films, right? I didn't notice, until hearing this live version, how beautiful the guitar patterns are. Reed, right? Maybe in late '66, when I was in college, I heard that VU and Warhol would be performing nearby, but failed to take interest. Soon after, it was Big Brother, and again I failed to take interest. Who knows what up-and-coming geniuses I'm missing as we speak?

  17. Jonh Ingham says Spike, yes the poster is an early Wes Wilson design. The Plastic Inevitable was the light show, tho from what I've seen they were mostly Warhol's films projected over the band. Guitar patterns courtesy of Mr. Reed.

  18. avenustylee says I like the song a lot. Wasn't it done by the Tom Tom Club, with Tina Weymouth (from the Talking Heads) and all a bit later?
