I was at my local indie shop and noticed that the wall of CDs next to the cash register was all alt.country and Americana. When I asked if it was popular he replied that it was his biggest selling genre. (Which shows once again how much insight major labels have on what's popular.) It started me thinking in a non-focussed way until I ended up on one of my favourite American bands, Little Feat.Little Feat still exist but as a totally different (and to me inferior) band from the original one that existed in the early 70s. They were critical darlings but never translated it into hit records. They were a typical example of Warner Records' policy of signing and supporting their friends - lead guitarist Lowell George had been in the Mothers and was part of the Ry Cooder - Taj Mahal - Randy Newman circle. Lowell was one of the best slide players in the world. In the words of the song 'Rock N Roll Doctor', "he's got two degrees in be-bop, A PhD in swing, He's a master of rhythm, He's a rock n roll king". The rest of the band were great musicians as well, especially drummer Richie Hayward, who's circular style can only be described as unique.Their records were highlights of their time, with wonderfully literate and funny lyrics. The first four records should definitely be in your collection, especially Sailing Shoes, Dixie Chicken and Feats Don't Fail Me Now. And if you have access to bootlegs, look for two live recordings from Ultrasonic Studios in 1973 and '74.They also had a huge appetite for drugs. It's especially evident in the first video you should see - check drummer Richie Hayward's eyes! Unfortunately, it destroyed the band and by the end of the decade Lowell and Richie were both dead. The video of Rock N Roll Doctor was for the UK show The Old Grey Whistle Test and was recorded at 9am, which doesn't prevent an amazing groove (maybe that explains the drugs). Unfortunately, the embedding data has been withheld, but you can link from "here":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEOlTZGuLKM.This video was recorded at The Rainbow in London and features Mick Taylor in a slide guitar duel with Lowell, albeit at a tempo that makes a turtle look fast.Once again, You Tube confirms it's the world's cultural museum.

  1. ScottyB says Absolutely agree on Little Feat... www.archive.org has more Little Feat (and Grateful Dead) bootlegs than you can shake a stick at... "Here's an interesting one from Nagoya '78":http://www.archive.org/details/lf1978-07-01.shnf Enjoy!

  3. Barney Hoskyns says I was there. One of the great gigs of all time. And Feat's first four albums have aged as well as anything from that heady time.

  4. Jonh Ingham says Thanks for the tip Scotty. I always forget about archive.org - it's got stuck in my mind as a haven for Deadheads. :-)

  5. kb says awesome. when i was 15 i used my 25 year old cousin's fake id to get into a tight-doored bar to see little feat...so fun. later saw them on my birthday in college. can hardly imagine what it like to hear them back when their eyes were a-rollin'.

  6. Mike the Knife says Glad to see George and Little Feat getting a little love, Jonh. And damn, Barney! You were at that gig? Rarely will you hear this from me, but I'm a tad jealous. As it happens I was just listening to the tracks "Easy to Slip" (which would count as one of my top 10 songs of all time, if I made ridiculous lists like that) and "Dixie Chicken," and, yes, they still sound as fresh as the day they were released.

  7. ScottyB says It used to be much more of a haven for Deadheads, but they seem to have made a lot of the soundboard bootlegs unavailable for download - Which is a bit annoying as the Dead have always been about turning a blind eye to Bootlegs... When the Archive first started they had a gentlemen's agreement with Dick's Picks that they wouldn't allow downloads of Dick's Picks releases and I didn't mind that...But they now seem to have taken things a step further. Fortunately I got a fair few off of the site before the new format kicked in :-)...Now I just need to move them from my laptop to the HDD connected to the stereo... Thanks again for the Little Feat find

  8. dermahrk says This reminds me to convert my Feat LPs to CD, then iTunes. I saw them live with Bonnie Raitt back in the day. Unfortunately, Lowell George was sick and not really up to par that night. I love his stuff, but the faux-jazz or whatever you want to call what the rest of the band did a lot of the time really seemed to go nowhere. And since George died, I of course lost all interest in "the band" after that. But, yes, his guitar playing, singing and songwriting (? I don't have credits to refer to here) were awesome and he is still missed.

  9. thecitizen says So this is what my brother used to go on about... When I was younger and he was a budding session musician, the name Little Feat would crop up time and again - along with Tower of Power. The names used to be mentioned along with the words "you really should listen to this". He had already introduced me to Flora Purim, Johnny Guitar Watson, Ernie Watts, The Band and early Doobie Brothers. I did get into Tower of Power on a grand scale - I still have his copy of Back to Oakland, but don't tell him. I just never got round to really listening to Little Feat. So thanks for reminding me John...got some hunting to do...

  10. Jonh Ingham says Mike, I'm jealous of Barney as well. Unless he's doing a Dorian Gray on us, it must have been one of his first concerts - a man of taste even then. Dermahrk, Lowell either wrote or had input into most of their work. In the recent Hotel California tv show (drawn from Barney's book on the Laurel Cyn scene) Linda Ronstadt namechecked him before launching into a gorgeous version of 'Willing'. (Forgot what a great interpreter she was/is.) citizen, what luck to have a brother like that. Follow scotty's tip and go to archive.org. They have both of the Ultrasonic Studio boots that I mentioned.
