Rock Shrine No. 48 – Imperial College (David Bowie)

Posted about 1 month ago

A bit of futurism, a bit of make-up, but best, lots of Gender Confusion. Was there a better way to shake up rock and roll?

On February 12, 1972, David Bowie brought his new Ziggy Stardust concept to the stage at Imperial College, London. The third date of the tour, it was effectively the night that Ziggy's Five Year Plan was unleashed on an unsuspecting public. Imperial College is one of London's most prestigious science universities, so when Bowie walked out in his open campery, there was much laughter and amusement all 'round. Pointing to his feet, he said, "Boots by Mr. Freedom." Pointing to each part of his body and telling the crowd who the clothes were by, he worked his way upward. By the time he got to "Hair by Keith at Smile", the crowd were cheering. The following concert put him on the cover of Melody Maker and started the juggernaut that conquered the world.

"Suffragette City" at Imperial College on Feb 12:

Imperial College was a standard stop on the rock tour circuit in the early '70s and many bands and artists played there. But none more memorably than the Dame.

Here's a review of David at London Central Polytechnic three months later.

When you look at the map, the oval roof next to the College is the Albert Hall.

He was pretty amazing. And up to the last time I saw him five years ago, still was.
