Blind Faith - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)

Posted about 1 year ago
Doing some dull stuff today, so cranking the stereo to help the time fly is a priority. But then this comes on. I'm helpless and have to play it over and over - it keeps me off the dull stuff but I'm not getting anything done.Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton played together at MSG on Feb 26th - effectively half of Blind Faith. I was never a fan of that group and while I've loved both Winwood and Clapton I would never have pursued a copy of this concert if I hadn't been told about it.Winwood played on the original of 'Voodoo Chile', so I guess he has more of a claim than just about anybody to do a version of it. Clapton always said he wanted to be in The Band, because with so many virtuosos he wouldn't have to carry the show. With Steve by his side he's able to step back and you can hear what he means because his solos go way off the meter. If you want to pretend you were at MSG, I give you three options:In the rich people's seats:Halfway back - it only cost you your first born:Up where the normal people breathe:

  1. davesonic says Ahhh, two of the greats. Maybe some day I'll be able to afford a show like this. Thanks Jonh.

  2. NeilNathan says i am a normal who got taken by a rich friend, which is ideal! the show was fantastic and winwood on lead guitar and clapton on rhythm was pretty damn impressive it was the oddest vibe at the show though it seemed like the place was filled with squares and geezers and actually had to go to the stairwell to light up a j, without being oggled at that was quite the contrast with the cream show last year, when i sat down and some ex hippie just handed me the j immediately

  3. davesonic says Yeah, some of the upper crust just wanted to be seen "Remember when we drove the Porche to Woodstock Luvy and smoked a marijuana?"

  4. Cody B says That contrast is kinda weird..I guess Ginger and Jack are the ones keepin' it real?

  6. Jonh Ingham says Cody - I wonder if Ginger was asked. Apparently he was reluctant to leave his farm to do the Cream gigs. At least they didn't try and bill it as Blind Faith.

  7. Cody B says It's hard to picture the scene at some of these shows..Is what we sometimes call "classic rock" on it's way to a museum culture, where only the elite can afford to attend? It is definitely a trip seeing the generation that grew up on Rock get to retirement age.

  8. Jonh Ingham says On the up side, at least it's not packaged like an oldies tour....There's an 80s package that keeps going out here, and (against their desires) even the Human League have played it. More money than when they tour by themselves.

  9. Spike says Around 1969 a friend who was a much more serious collector of rock music than me said to me that we young folks will grow old liking only the music of our youth just the way our parents' generation liked only music from the big band era, and his comment surprised me but, after a moment, made perfect sense.

  11. TylerDurden says the laid back rolling blues lead of the 'old-heads' --> back when acid was pure and unadulterated -> and the women who showed their boobies back then wouldn't think about it now-a-days. beautiful flippin post John, very much needed-> thanks brah

  15. Max Load says More ramblings from me. I persuaded my dad to take me to see Family's farewell tour around 1973. John you may be the only person round here who remembers them. All the old band members on stage at the same time. Including Steve Winwood.I remember feeling quite cool seeing Jim Cregan on TV playing with Rod Stewart a few days later. And a few years later, when I was old enough to go out on my own, saw Chapman with Streetwalkers in Hyde Park. A memorable moment when just as they played My Friend the Sun, on a rainy day in London, the sun did indeed come out. This may be faulty memory, but I think the same rain that started around the same time Ann Peebles, who was earlier on the bill, sang I Can't Stand the Rain. Tempted as I am, I won't dig out the Ann Peebles version. Because another fine band my fine dad took me to see did it too. (Ann Peebles is better though.) But here's a postcard of Humble Pie.

  16. Jonh Ingham says Gee Max, how many underrated bands and artists can you mention in one paragraph?! I saw that Family tour as well - great tunes. Wonder what Chapman's doing now.

  17. Mike the Knife says That triptych of compare-and-contrast videos was a treat. As regards "classic" rock and the ossified tastes of the aging, I've always been one to know and revere the greats of the past, dig the greats of the now, and look for the greats of the future. (Let's just say that retirement is not in my deck of cards...) Stave off boredom, oldsters! Get with the new!

  18. myworldhasnoend says I'm the guy who recorded the third video from your collection.that concert was unforgetable.voodoo chile was the highlight of the night though there was alot of people complaining on the length of the song.stoopid people. the seats i was seating in werent that bad its just my camera didnt have enough zoom.thats what $210 can get you at an eric clapton concert.

  19. Jonh Ingham says My world - That is brilliant: Talk about serendipity. That's funny about people complaining - it just backs up my suspicion that all these people go because they can boast about it, not because they're involved. I guess none of these people were ever Grateful Dead fans!
