WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The Zep At The O2

Posted about 1 year ago
It was a complete surprise in the middle of the 10 O’Clock News to suddenly hear the noisefest that is ‘Black Dog’, but I’d forgotten that Gods reuniting is a newsworthy story. It was an even better surprise to hear how fabulous they sounded.I’ve been rambling around YouTube looking at all the clips fans have thrown up from the show. It’s fun to see it from so many angles and distances and while the sound is generally tinny it does show the Zep to be in fine form, particularly ‘Ramble On’ and ‘In My Time of Dying’. Because media is mostly written by hacks and not fans, there was a general air of amazement that they were in good voice and power. If they’d bothered to see Robert Plant last year with his band Strange Sensation they would know he’s been keeping parts of the Zep repetoire lubed and supercharged.I can remember exactly when and where I first heard them. What an amazing noise – we played the album about four times in a row. A few months later I was lucky enough to be in LA when they came to town on their second tour and saw them. Robert was wearing what looked like a girl’s lace blouse and Jimmy was in black jeans, leather jacket and Converse sneakers. (Cool or what?) At one point Plant helped a girl climb on stage and dance with him. Hanging around at the end of the show I saw Page walking across the floor and excitedly shook his hand – he looked kind of embarrassed by the fannish attention. I daresay he got used to it.When you can see their faces in The O2 fan vids they looked like they were having fun. I hope they decide to play some more, because it’s an amazing noise I’d like to feel again.

  2. Mike the Knife says Whoa. Still thumping after all these years. I wasn't so worried about Plant, because of the very things you cited, Jonh. And that collaboration with A. Krauss ain't small potatoes either. Page was the question, but the clips bear witness to undimmed skills.

  3. ROCKNROLLPIMP says been too busy to search for clips right now CHILLS THE CHILLS gawd i have never wished i was rich as bad as i do now so i could have paid for that

  4. Jonh Ingham says I'm with you Pimp - if I had 10 grand I woulda been on E-Bay in a flash. Mike - the Alison Krauss lp is a thing of beauty. apparently they plan to tour in the Spring. But yeah, after what I'd heard from a producer who elected not to work with them, I was wondering about him - but some of the shading and flourishes shows no dimming of the talent. lyrikhan - I envy me too! From 69 - 71 it seemed like they were in LA every 3 months. It didn't hurt that their gigs attracted the hottest looking girls in SoCal.

  5. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says I agree about Page. I was really surprised hearing how great he sounded. I remember seeing him on some MTV stage some years ago and he sounded terrible. I do not want to get into details.............since Fred Durst was also on that stage and maybe that was the reason why things fell apart. John: I'm hitting the post office today!!

  6. QueenofHell says I really want to see Plant and Krauss. I love their album. It's the only thing I've been listening to on my ipod for the last week. But they're playing Wembley Arena and I hate Wembley Arena, so I'm not going to go. Tickets went on sale this morning. I expect they've sold out by now.

  7. Jonh Ingham says Wow, thanks Hellen. I just got tickets. Even though I hate Wembley and this is music for something much smaller.

  8. davesonic says It's refreshing to hear people who didn't go saying they wish they had. So many other blogs (ahem Lefsetz) are bitching about how they are selling out and how they are ruining the myth that was Led Zeppelin.

  9. Jonh Ingham says Yeah I read all that. What myth? Plant and Page toured a good portion of the Zep catalogue back in '95. No-one was bitching then. Generally I like Lefsetz but he's sounding like a grumpy old man.

  10. QueenofHell says Oh, good stuff!

  11. brendanhalpin says Yeah, this rocks. Plant definitely has good vocal tone, but he's lost the range he used to have. It's interesting to hear him reworking the songs for his older voice. I'd love to hear more.

  12. ivylander says Funny, back in my youth I thought Zep was over after "3." Now that I am approaching my dotage, rawking out is less important to me than ever. Then why is it I wished so hard that I could have seen this?

  13. Jonh Ingham says Bill, it is a question mature men the world over keep asking themselves.

  14. contrabandwidth says If Floyd can re-unite (all be it for a one off show) why can't the mighty Zep. Everyone knew it would happen, just when.

  15. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says "Now that I am approaching my dotage, rawking out is less important to me than ever"............................. Bill.......................you gotta admit that you rock out in the shower once in awhile? Do the old sing and dance routine. I hope that Zep decides to do a few more gigs and that one of them will be at arms reach.

  16. steve simon says as a kid i can remember the opening riff of , "good times, bad times", it is still in my head
    Permalink posted 12/14/2007
  17. Jonh Ingham says Steve, that was the show's opening song, which certainly shows their sense of humour remains undiminished. The opening line is "When I was a young man..."

  20. ivylander says Henry, I didn't say that the rawk had abandoned me entirely. It just shows up more fitfully now, kind of like my basketball moves.....

  21. Bartleby says Starter for ten, Jeremy. Oops, I meant Jonh. They look and sound amazing - total ass kicking as my cousin would say. What I like with Page & Co is that despite the marketing machinery the music always prevails. Thanks for this reminder.

  25. bassguitarhero says Me and ZZ Todd were just talking about how much we would seriously pay if they came anywhere near Texas, and we decided that we would probably take out loans if it was needed. They need to go on tour!

  26. Jonh Ingham says Amen bass. I know that feeling. Been spinning the Zep on a rotation that would make a 70s FM radio programmer sad with envy.
