Funky Friday Is Built Like A Brick House

Posted 8 months ago

Once upon a time Lionel Richie was considered cool. That's when he was in The Commodores.

Coolest on the Tenor Sax... and as this video and tune has always proved out - Clyde was _way cooler, and had a funkier vocal too.

Back in the mid-80s, I met a guy who, like myself, had a Commodore 64. This person also happened to DJ on the local college radio station, where he played the usual college-rock classics of the time (and that was about when college rock started getting glorious). He was a bit older than the other DJs, and so he'd work a few tracks in from earlier decades, plus he had a demo-tape show where he'd play unknown bands, but mostly he was fairly typical. Whenever I'd be listening to him, I'd call the station (being college radio, the DJ would answer the phone) and request "Brick House" by the Commodores, in honor of our computers. And he'd play it, too. (Lame anecdote, I know.)

I first heard this by way of the Muppets From Space,  which is packing a fistful of funky nuggets....Machine Gun's a killer too

But would say both are outfunked by Billy Preston's Outta Space....

Yes, he was cool - by association. But those days are long gone. (The cheese! The cheese!)

Neill - He's massive everywhere. When I was at O2 and we were doing the negotiations with AEG over the O2 Dome sponsorship, they let drop that Lionel had done a 20+ date tour of Europe and had sold out 10,000 - 20,000 seat arenas in every city.

Mike - How could you bring down the tone of Funky Friday like that?? I've never deleted a comment but there's always a first time.

Charley - Pub quiz trivia: the video for All Night Long was directed by Mike Nesmith of Monkees fame.

Mondo - Now that is fonky!

It's inconceivable that the man who made this is also responsible for "Hello" (which I won't post the clip of....).

Well once you tell a broad she's 'Three Times A Lady' and it goes "cross-over", a jobbing tunesmith knows which side of the funk he's going to be standing. If the song was bad, the video plumbed new depths of maudlin kitsch sentimentality.
