Greatest Number of Greatest Hits Albums

Posted over 2 years ago
How many Best Of… albums can a career sustain? Where there’s a will there’s a way…. Kylie MinogueSingles [1990] Greatest Hits [1992] Greatest Remix Hits [1993 and 1998] Hits+ [2000] Greatest Hits 1987 – 1992 [2003] 1987 – 1997 [2003] 1987 – 1999 [2003] Artist Collection [2004] Ultimate Kylie [2004] Ultimate Kylie (Special Edition) [2006]A close second is… The BanglesSuper Hits [1998] Eternal Flame [1998] Simply The Best [1998] Greatest Hits [2000] Best Of The Bangles [2001] Definitive Collection [2003] Bangles: The Collection [2003] Essential Bangles [2004] Glitter Years: Rarities and Gems [2005]It’s truly impressive is that both of them were able to release three albums in one year and two albums in another year.Because Susanna Hoff is hideously out of tune on the chorus of “Eternal Flame” I’m banishing her to no-video hell. Instead, here’s Kylie doing some pop-minx brand maintenance.

  3. contrabandwidth says What about bands that have at most 2 albums before breaking up or one of their members died and they have 1 or more greatest hits albums? I always find this suspicious since they could easily fit both albums on one disc for most bands. I found 2 greatest hits albums for Ugly Kid Joe (who apparently had more than 1 album!) But, "Everything About You" wasn't even good enough to by a greatest hits album over!

  4. Jonh Ingham says Hellen: Oh there must be some fey young men around the country who couldn't say no. Spike: You refer to the video, no doubt. Contra: I see these specious Greatest Hits albums you describe as a triumph of matter over mind.

  5. Misstee says I think they panicked when she announced she was sick....but I have no silly excuse for the Bangles other than the fact she's married to a famous director and is trying to keep up. The best package i've ever seen: 20th century classic collection: Johnny Hates Jazz...

  6. Anna says I can't believe that the video you chose to post was the ad for Agent Provocateur. Would all the MOGgers in the audience stand up? hahaha

  7. Lizziegreeneyes says Not even The Beatles could save us from this sonic greatest hits hell !!! *Anna:* I got your STAND right here...

  8. Lizziegreeneyes says *Misstee:* _I have the +Johnny Hates Jazz+ album_... said sheepishly as I sneak back into the darkness of my shame ;)

  9. Jonh Ingham says Anna - I was merely pointing out that brand maintenance and keeping your name in lights takes many different forms....[uh huh.] Misstee and Lizzie: No group is immune. There's a guy in a record company who's job is releasing Greatest Hits. He is compelled to justify his existence. Unfortunately.

  11. QueenofHell says Kylie has such a fabulous bottom. Quite, Jonh. Speaking of fey young men, I'm meeting up with my gay pal and his boyfriend in an hour or so. We're going to see All About My Mother at the Old Vic. The gay community seem to have a thing for Almodovar as well. Scott queued for tickets in the morning to get the best steats. Lucky me. We're on the front row in the centre. I'm excited.

  16. Dale says Followup question: how many of the Kylie compilations were designed to break her more in the States, where she's known for two songs, if she's known at all? You can almost hear the compilationists in the meeting, telling the label boss why THIS track order is the one that'll open her up wide in the States.

  17. Jonh Ingham says Dale - Do you think it even got that far? The Kylie regeneration in the UK and Europe started around 2000 - a lot of those releases look like they're grabbing that coat tail ride. Rawk and Cody - Amen, brothers. As a guy who periodically remasters Pet Sounds for yet another release said, start worrying about these groups when the re-releases stop. Aerosmith have a pretty big catalogue to work from; in the Doors case it's a triumph of finesse. The upside for us is that htye had to release all those live albums to keep us interested.

  18. Cody B says Multiple labels, longevity, and good ol' record company greed have done the 'smith well in the GH competition. I bet as things go further into the tank there will be even more best of 's released. Wal Mart loves best ofs!

  19. dermahrk says The Bangles only released 4 albums (and yes, I own every one) but you are listing 9 compilations! There are even more listed on AllMusic.com. Must disagree with you on the "hideously out of tune" comment - I've heard that song a lot and that thought never occurred to me. Wow, now I'm wide awake at 6:11 in the morning. Not sure if it's the coffee or this double shot of estrogen!

  20. Jonh Ingham says dermahrk: seriously...listen to the chorus. She's so out of tune on "...eterrrrnnnal flame" that it's painful. That this was their biggest song - a global no. 1 - only confirmed that most people don't know, don't hear, don't care. Which is fine by me. But I make the rules on my page. :- D

  21. soulrocket says fans & collectors of mainstream music have always been exploited that way. on occasion some of the greatest hits albums are well compiled & add a couple of rare tracks to boot. hellen, im not surprised the gay community has a thing for almodovar. he was part of a "musical comedy duet" named almodovar y macnamara in the early 80s. the video is a bit shocking but you get the idea. lyrics go something like this... i want to be a mom, i will have a baby, i will exploit him, i will dress him as a woman & i will inlay him in the wall... totally bizarre, and yes, they have a best of album too.

  22. Jonh Ingham says Soul - that is beyond weird and wildly wonderful. Reminds me that in the mid/late 80s in Japan the only intelligent TV chat show was hosted by Peter, a flamboyant transvestite (he plays the Fool in Kurosawa's 'Ran'), and a famous butch lesbian.

  24. Girlcrawl says Am digging Kylie's video - muy caliente. Am suddenly compelled to shop for lingerie (effective advert - damn those marketers), but am fairly certain I will not look like that no matter how many Agent Provocateur threads I might purchase. Had no idea regarding the astounding number of 'Best Of' these two had released - interesting.
