Calling Tour De France Fans

Posted almost 5 years ago
Those of you who have written about your love for the bio-chemistry experiment known as the Tour De France might be interested to see a photo tour of the "Trek bike factory.":http://blog.guykawasaki.com/2007/08/my-visit-to-tre.htmlIt's a fascinating tour of how high-tech bikes get made, with a lot of photos of Lance Armstrong's Tour bikes, plus that of Greg Le Monde. If this photo turns you on, you know where to click.PS: Just joking on the 'bio-chemistry' bit. The Tour has a long and noble history of tilting the odds in a participant's favour; the first Tour was so rife with cheating it almost killed the event at birth. Riders were taking trains and skipping whole sections.

  2. LadyC says awesome. what is interesting about present day bike manufacturing is that taiwan couldn't compete with the low cost market from china et al and decided to upgrade their output and concentrate on high quality manufacturing.

  3. goodmusiconly says You rang? :) _"the first Tour was so rife with cheating it almost killed the event at birth. Riders were taking trains and skipping whole sections."_ ... True ... but seriously, can we blame them?! The 1910 Tour was the first one where the race went into the high mountains, over unfinished roads and goat trails. The first rider to complete the punishing hike-a-bike stage met the race director in Paris and shouted, "You're murderers! Murderers!" ... it's also funny that the men would take smoking breaks on the way up, believing it would open up their airways and increase their lung power. Grievous: Alberto Contador won this year, though some suspect he too may have doped at some point. As for Landis, the Tour director no longer considers him the official winner, but I believe his title has not yet been stripped, pending closure of his case by the UCI and USA Cycling. Interesting link, Jonh, thanks!
