Group Wants Ban on Gwen Stefani Concert

Posted over 2 years ago
I’m writing this from Saudi Arabia. Trust me when I say you don’t know how liberal and rich with activity your daily life is – no matter where you’re living. Especially if you’re a woman. But that has nothing to do with this post, just an observation. In today’s Arab News is the following item:Malaysia should stop the Kuala Lumpur leg of Gwen Stefani’s upcoming Asian tour because of her indecent dressing and obscenity, a Muslim students’ group said yesterday. The 10,000 strong National Union of Malaysian Students said Stefani’s Aug. 21 concert would clash with local Asian and Islamic values.“Her video clips are too obscene,” the Mohamad Hilmi Ramli, group’s president, told Reuters. “We want the organisers to cancel the concert, failing which we will ask the authorities to intervene.” Hilmi also criticised Malaysian mobile phone firm Maxis Communications for promoting the event.“Maxis has been staging a series of foreign acts… to make a profit and to expose our young generation to things such as moral decay,” he said.

  4. ponchoandy says Hey now, don't be hatin on Gwen! "Love Angel Music Baby" is a great pop record... it's not high art but it's better than 98% of the other stuff on Top 40 radio.... And those Malaysians say "moral decay" like it's a bad thing. ;)

  6. Augusts1 says I'm sure 98% of those 10,000 students are secret Gwen lusters, hehe. Usually the ones who protest the most are the ones who are closet fans. Don't those students have anything better to do, like uh, school perhaps?! It's not like there aren't more pressing issues in life, sheesh. And I can think of many other artists who'd be major corrupters of conservative values like Marilyn Manson & NIN.

  7. Dale says No, you misunderstand, the protest is homework at the school. ;)

  8. mousetrap says I never envisioned myself having much in common with a Muslim student group, but if they do manage to put a stop to Gwen Stefani's concerts, I'll be happy to, like, carry a sign or something. Hell, if they can bring her entire _career_ to a screeching halt, I may convert. 'Course, I guess it's not her casual relationship with pitch and intonation that they're taking issue with...but hey, you gotta start somewhere.

  12. Anna says Bradley is fired. I agree with ponchoandy, I always thought it was a good thing ;) And I'm sad about all the social-cultural observations I can make, while sitting comfortably on my couch of freedom.
