WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Squirrel Nut Zippers We Hardly Knew Ye

Posted over 2 years ago
This dovetails with a couple of Teresa's post awhile back about bands she had to break to her son that were no more, and her love of old time cartoon.Been using YouTube to catch up on some of the videos etc. that my non-tv lifestyle has caused. Finally had the sense to type in Squirrel Nut Zippers and found this vid for "The Ghost of Stephen Foster" an EXCELLENT vid as well as a GREAT song.I started doing some research and it seems like they are playing a few gigs in Feb. Ms. Whalen has gone solo, but will be back with part of the band, at least. These guys deifintely weren't just a bunch of people cashing in on the brief swing revival, rehashing old sound (not that there's anything wrong with that) but were some brilliant-yet obviously under appreciated- innovators.Sadly there may have been a reason for the great animation of the video. Supposedly they all hated each other so much by the time "Perenial Favorites" came out that they couldn't be in the same room. Even some songs were recorded piecemeal and then spliced together, not that you can tell. The album is a bit darker in mood, though they always had quite a dallop of that. Anyway. Check this link out and spread the word.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1DISNYj0QU&NR

  1. Jess Horrible says seems silly that they'd keep recording at that point... but yes, when snz were on, they did some very good stuff.

  2. Jollypirate says SOME good stuff?! SOME good stuff! Oh, okay it wasn't all gold, but they were one of the few bands to get me out and buying new albums (I'm a pretty big thrifter). I never really got into "Hell" that much but the first and third albulms just blew me away. I was debating whether to possible try and see them, even in their reduced state, in Maryland rather than head to Guatamala, but then I saw some vids of them live that seemed pretty lackluster. This vid link I posted though may be one of the best videos EVER in my humble opinion.
