Rilo Kiley's "Under The Blacklight"

Posted over 4 years ago
To be honest, the success of Rilo Kiley has been pretty bewildering to me up 'til now. Much as I liked Jenny Lewis' country solo album, "Rabbit Fur Coat", I never grasped the appeal of her band. For all her likeable LA snarkiness, their music always sounded like a grey jangle; as if the American mainstream had embraced, what, The Sundays maybe, as the future of music. Quite strange, but in quite a dull way.For the past couple of weeks, though, I've been hammering their new album, "Under The Blacklight", and now I understand. Not that, unless my memory is playing tricks on me, "Under The Blacklight" sounds much like Rilo Kiley's previous records. Instead, it's a bright, wry confection that resembles a clever indie kid's fantasy of LA pop music. This is my first post here, so please bear with me while I get the hang of Mog. I've written plenty more about this Rilo Kiley album on my blog over at "Uncut":http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/index.php?blog=6&title

  1. Kate says Hey John, welcome to MOG! I am on the fence about Rilo Kiley. I like Jenny Lewis's voice, and their lyrics can tell great stories, but there is something very junior high about their previous albums. Like they would be the perfect thing to play were I 14 and pining over a crush. I'll give them another try, though.

  2. drewfonts says I often find myself wishing that the American mainstream had embraced The Sundays as the future of music...although to be fair, The Sundays pretty much embraced The Smiths as the future of music. And Kate, I think you should give them another try...I wrote them off initially, but came back and I'm so glad I did. Pick up More Adventurous and give it a hack.
