Ou Est Le Swimming Pool singer commits suicide at festival

Posted over 1 year ago

Charles Haddon, singer of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, committed suicide today (Friday) right after appearing on stage at the 'Pukkelpop' festival in Belgium.

It was reported that after the band had finished their set, Haddon (22) killed himself by climbing into a mast located in a backstage parking area and jumping off. His act may have been connected to an incident that occured during his band's performance that afternoon, when a stage-dive by Haddon into the audience had allegedly seriously injured a girl.

Haddon's death was announced at an impromptu press conference called by the festival organisers and came less than 24 hours after another demise at the same festival. On Thursday, Michael Been (60), former member of 1980s band The Call, sound engineer for the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and father of BRMC's bass player Robert Been, passed away in hospital after collapsing backstage.

How tragic! What about the injured girl? Will she be ok? It would be a shame if she will recover OK and he killed himself thinking he was going to be put in jail for something like that.

    So sad.

Family of the 18-year-old girl confirmed to Belgian press that, although her injuries are serious (a number of broken vertibrae), she will eventually make a full recovery. But by the time that news came out, Haddon had already been found dead (no one witnessed him leaping to his death).

All he knew at the time of his suicide was that the girl was unable to stand up or walk after he had landed on top of her, and that her family were likely to press charges against him.

The band had finished their set and was walking off stage when Haddon decided to turn around and surprise the audience with his stage dive. Realising he had injured the girl, he remained by her side until she was taken to hospital and took her details so he could stay in touch with her. Reports say he appeared increasingly worried and upset.

Unconfirmed reports say Haddon was already suffering from depression, and it has also been alleged that some time after the incident Haddon had an argument with his fellow bandmates -- but 'unconfirmed' means these are mere rumours, as far as I'm concerned.
