WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

What your choice of music says about your personality?

Posted about 1 year ago

Another piece of potentially pointless research to lighten up your day (or not):

Results from research by the department of psychology at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh show a distinct correlation between people's personality traits and the style of music they enjoy.

Click here to read the article from the Independent, UK.

I wonder if university boffins who spend their time doing research like this can be classed as lovers of a specific type/style of music? Or those refusing to return the survey?

Since I cannot pin my musical preferences down on one or two musical genres, I am afraid this research is completely lost on me, but perhaps other MOGgers reading this may well be able to recognize themselves in the results.

The "survey Jo", if ever there was one, would tell you Jo doesn't really like country or jazz, but from time to time and depending on mood likes bits of rock, indie, pop, blues, classical, metal, funk, reggae, ska, dance or rap, while all of the genres mentioned will have particular musical representations that she might either totally love or loathe; her personality is one with (too?) high self-esteem (read: arrogant so-and-so), hard-working, at ease with oneself, limited creativity, not kind, not generous, and not outgoing.

Mmm, perhaps the survey results are accurate then, if they contain "music preferences: all over the place (but music collection neatly organized) = personality: all over the place (but organized)?"

How would you 'place' yourself?

A very interesting article.  Apocalyptica makes sense now...

My music tastes vary as well.  I can enjoy music from almost any genre, though I find myself leaning more to alternative or hard rock.  Personality-wise, I guess I would relate most to the Heavy Metal croud: Very creative and at ease with themselves, but not very outgoing or hard-working.

Maybe you need more than one personality? I have very little time for the Idea that people can fit neatly into boxs like eggs into cartons and I like all my personalities

    @ earthman: True.

Even eggs that fit neatly into boxes still each consist of a shell, egg-white and yolk, and every single one of them is different in shape, size and consistency.

"Rap enthusiasts, on the other hand, tend to think a lot of themselves and are extremely outgoing. Those who love dance music are equally extrovert but are more likely to be unfriendly and slightly self-centred."

    lol...fits me perfectly.

The thing that caught my eye in the article is that they had people describe their own personality.  So what this really means is that this is how people see themselves, not that they actually ARE that way.

Not a very objective study.  They'd have been better off to take a survey of people AND then ask a psychologist to give an estimate of this person's personality.  It wouldn't be much more accurate, but it would at least allow an impartial third party to quantify the personality data.

All that being said (and it was a mouthful), I don't see any correlation between my tastes (mostly prog rock with some latin, some country and some classical) and my personality (creative, hard working, kind (when warranted), somewhat generous (again, depends on circumstance) with a self-esteem that vacillates between high (when talking about computers) to low (when talking about love)

    kk.
