I’m so turned on by this compilation album. It is Leonard Cohen in a whole new way. I’m blown away by how these artists from various genres have made these songs their own. That is a huge feat considering who they are dealing with. Cohen may be a self-absorbed, womanizing sage, but he’s unabashed in his honesty, and in taking that risk he has made great rock n’ roll.
When will the American audience embrace him the way Europe has since the sixties?
Martha Wainwright’s version of _Tower of Song_ is so achingly beautiful. _The Future_ sung by Teddy Thompson is raw and relevant. Nick Cave performs _Suzanne_ a full beat off from the rest of the singers. That timing lends a unique and interesting presentation to this standard. Oh, I also want to gush about Antony singing _If It Be Your Will_. I believe it is the dramatic climax to the album.
I'd crawl to you baby/ And I'd fall at your feet/ And I'd howl at your beauty Like a dog in heat/ And I'd claw at your heart/ And I'd tear at your sheet I'd say please, please/ I'm your man.
