Watched the Townes Van Zandt documentary
"Be Here To Love Me" tonight. The story is nothing new, always the same in fact: the genius, the drinking, the drugs, the demise. But the movie is a beautiful tribute to one of the greatest songwriters of the late 20th century. It's amazing, listening to his songs: they are so good, they seem effortless. Musical storytelling is a true gift, that much is clear from the beginning; Van Zandt's songs play a big role in the modern American songwriting tradition. I grew up listening to Lyle Lovett and Emmylou Harris and Utah Phillips and all the folk singers ever invented, and I learned early on that some stories are more fully captured in song...It seems silly to say anything here. It's all been said already. So let's just leave it like this: it's a movie worth watching, but the songs speak just fine for themselves.
