WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

forget most, remember some

Watched the Townes Van Zandt documentary "Be Here To Love Me" tonight. The story is nothing new, always the same in fact: the genius, the drinking, the drugs, the demise. But the movie is a beautiful tribute to one of the greatest songwriters of the late 20th century. It's amazing, listening to his songs: they are so good, they seem effortless. Musical storytelling is a true gift, that much is clear from the beginning; Van Zandt's songs play a big role in the modern American songwriting tradition. I grew up listening to Lyle Lovett and Emmylou Harris and Utah Phillips and all the folk singers ever invented, and I learned early on that some stories are more fully captured in song...It seems silly to say anything here. It's all been said already. So let's just leave it like this: it's a movie worth watching, but the songs speak just fine for themselves.

  1. Puffmagic says Don't be reluctant to say things here, or anywhere for that matter. Truth is everything's already been said or written or sung. As Solomon said "..there is no new thing under the sun.." Besides, what do music geeks do if not sit around and talk about the same revelations on pop culture over and over again? I mean, how many times can you say OK Computer is a five star album or that The Who were one of the three greatest bands of the last 40 years or that Yoko broke up The Beatles and still have it seem like the first time anyone's ever said it? Answer: Apparently as many times as a hipster open his mouth between gulps of Pabst Blue Ribbon and thoughtful drags on a clove cigarette. Point is, what's Mog for if not to geek out a bit? Gush, gush! I'd never heard Towne Van Zandt until now!

  3. Spencer Owen says I'm glad Yoko broke up those Beatles. Yoko's first two albums are better than anything any of the Beatles released as solo artists. ... I'm sorry, what, did I say that? Because I mean it. Ohh!
