Music to Start a Cult To

Posted over 5 years ago

Gram Rabbit is making my ears curl these days. And I'm not alone: Kate and Champy and I have it on daily rotation down at the HQ. It's grungy electro space chick rock extraordinaire, with spooky guitars, fluffy ears, and songs about roadkill. Almost as if I had written it myself.

But I didn't; that job went to the Royal Order of Rabbits, a self-described "happy cult"- and what a cult! Jesika Von Rabit is clearly the monarch of the bunny bunch, warbling loosely into the mic while accompanying herself on guitar, keys or bass. Todd Rutherford chimes in with the consort's harmony, not to mention sporadic guitar solos. Travis Cline contributes with noise and "general mayhem", and Eric Jonasson plugs in the last crucial element: more guitar.

Oh go on, have a listen, it's rabbit pot pie.

Here are two songs from Music to Start a Cult To, their 2004 debut:
Witness - Gram Rabbit
Dirty Horse - Gram Rabbit

Mmmmmm, bunnies.

  1. watchbatteries says Music and Cults? Why not mention The Polyphonic Spree, who do a cover of "Lithium" on their new album?

  11. extraordinarypoems says Side note: Speaking of cults, I'm reading about the people who lived at Jonestown. The book focuses on the people who went to live there, why, and what the community/turned cult did to actually help many people before Jim Jones went crazy or until his insanity finally showed up. More importantly, it humanizes the approximately 900 people who are unfortunately often just seen as a group of delusional people who killed themselves with poisoned kool-aid. I left the book at home and can't think of the exact title, but anyone who's interested can ask me and I'll provide the details Monday. There are a lot of other books out there that might be just as good; I don't know. p.s. I just listened to "Witness" --- nice.

  12. morst says Hm, I recorded their set at the Crampout . . My buddy Rob posted it as a bit torrent but I'm not sure it is still being seeded. They were definitely a bit surreal-sounding, like high-desert techno-twang. I'll have to give 'em a good re-listen. Thanks for the reminder. They were definitely the most interesting-looking act at Pappy and Harriet's that weekend, with Bugs Salcido running a close second and the lovely Neko Case not looking too shabby herself. Too bad Neko does not allow recording of her live shows :-(
