Joanna Newsom - Ys

Posted over 5 years ago
Good lord in heaven, this album is amazing.Listen to it on headphones! The instrumentation and vocal arrangements are full of subtlety... and the lyrics are gorgeous. Check out this, my favorite bit from Emily:

Anyhow - I sat by your side, by the waterYou taught me the names of the stars overhead that I wrote down in my ledgerThough all I knew of the rote universe were those pleiades loosed in decemberI promised you I'd set them to verse so I'd always remember

That the meteorite is a source of the lightAnd the meteor's just what we seeAnd the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee

And the meteorite's just what causes the lightAnd the meteor's how it's perceivedAnd the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee...

Gorgeous.I know Joanna's voice can be a bit abrasive to the uncovered ear, but it's definitely been toned down for this album, and... oh kids, give her a shot. You won't be sorry. She is, in my humble opinion, one of the best lyricists I've ever heard -- and I care a lot about lyrics, so you can trust me on that.Plus, I've had little bits and fragments of her melodies in my head for over a week.Ys comes out on November 14th.Its cover is kinda lame, though:

  1. supertopsecret says I saw Ms Joanna at Arthur Ball in LA last year and she played her new songs for me. She ent shivers down my spine. If you like Joanna and you like quite electric symphonies you should check out the wonderful AK-Momo. Perhaps I can make you a CD.

  2. Rinserepeat says I love this album, and while 'Milk Eyed Mender' was wonderful, 'Ys' is just on another level entirely. My wife thought 'Cosmia' was a new symphonic Bjork track until she listened a bit closer...

  9. champy says I saw her play the harp and sing at a friend of mine's party. It was rad, really beautiful and intimate...and as it turns out she is my friends cousin. Weird right?

  10. tybees says The one thing that has kept me from delving into Ms. Newsom ??is?? her voice. I respect your taste, though, so I'll remain open-minded and give it a try. Those lyrics are quite fantastic.

  14. Lester Jonze says she looks like she's got that lazy wandering eye real bad, yo. worse than thom yorke. like this chick i knew in high school, you had to stand about 60 degrees to her left so she could see you.so we would stand just to her right, flash gang signs, grab ourselves and what not, she never even knew we were there, way cool.
