As part of the Silver Lake Film Festival, 2007 was the first year in which a music component was added to showcase the best in Los Angeles independent music. Rising stars on the LA indie circuit Sea Wolf, The Bird and the Bee and The Little Ones shared the stage at LA’s new venue the EchoPlex for a night of laidback rock.
Formerly a member of LA indie darling, Irving, Alex Church has found a captive audience with his new band Sea Wolf. On record, Sea Wolf’s soft, layered harmonies are reminiscent of Elliott Smith, but live, they have more of a rocking element exhibited by such bands as The Decemberists. Church has an undeniable Nico quality to his voice which meshes well with the orchestral quality of his band mates. Overall, Sea Wolf has the ambiance of a 60’s folk singer in the same vein as a Lou Reed. “You’re a Wolf,” Sea Wolf’s song that has taken a liking to radio airplay, and “Black Dirt,” were the audience grabbers for the evening. Overall, the set was peaceful and serene, with audience members bobbing their heads and smiling.
The Bird and the Bee followed with a 60’s era rock aesthetic inspired set. The members of The Bird and the Bee looked as though they’ve just stepped out of “Gidgit.” Their sound is a cross between the electronically experimental Brit duo PSAPP and Frou-Frou’s Imogen Heap. Singer Inara George’s voice has a chanteuse quality to her voice that when coupled with soft electro beats, stylish piano and an unusual emphasis on the xylophone offer a bouncy, sexy sound that could easily be heard in the background of a film like “Garden State.”
Culminating the evening was The Little Ones, a band headed straight to stardom. Their music is catchy and their energy is a force to be reckoned with. From instrument switches to rocking out the cowbell, The Little Ones are true performers who not only have magnetic chemistry on stage, but consistently win over crowds who may not necessarily have heard of them. According to their website, The Little Ones sound like “Tiki shacks, lobster, thought bubbles, winks, juggling, laughter, games of laser tag, chocolate, burritos and smiles.” This description is not far off from their live set, but a decent translation of this might be dance pop with heavy percussive backup.
Sea Wolf, The Bird and the Bee and The Little Ones were a great bill in that they offered something for everyone; chill, happiness music with a little dancing thrown in.
