WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

All the pennies in the Thames will not make it how it was

It's kinda a strange phenomenon, but it seems to me that Bloc Party's b-sides/bouns tracks are almost always outstanding. It's like they shouldn't be b-sides at all. The first one to really buck this trend was 'Hero' off of the Two More Years single. And the Weekend In The City bonus tracks are much better than Weekend proper. Listening to these song, I always wonder why they didn't make the cut. Like 'Always New Depths' it's a favorite of mine, I wonder why it didn't make it onto Silent Alarm. Although, I'd be hard pressed to guess what it'd replace on that album. Anyhoo, 'Always New Depths' really benefits from some great Matt Tong drumming. And speaking of Matt's drumming, here's 'Sunday' a great Channel Four video with Gordon helping out.

  1. Marigold says Ha. It is funny you are bringing this up. I was just thinking of this the other day when I was uploading some Adorable b-sides up onto the internet. There are two bands....oh wait....three bands I can think of that their singles seem to be just as good as the actual LP tracks. # 1. The Stone Roses # 2. Adorable # 3. Mogwai I sometimes wonder if it is just how much I love the band. Maybe that has a lot to do with it. I know you love Bloc Party a lot so I am sure that has something to do with it. The three bands I just listed do not have a bad song in my opinion.

  3. JeffHot says Some b-sides are just that: b-sides even if they are a band I really like. Rilo Keily come to mind. Some of The White Stripes b-sides are less than stellar, some are just weird. Same goes for Guided By Voices. But there are so many hit or miss songs in GBV's catalog anyway it's hard to tell what's a b-side and whats' not. Smashing Pumpkin's b-sides have always been entertaining (I'm thinking Pisces Iscariot and The Aeroplane Flies High) Camera Obsura's b-side 'Alaska' is better than some of the songs off of Let's Get Out Of The Country. I'm curious to hear those Adorable ones.

  4. Marigold says Thats right. Smashing Pumkins b-sides were pretty solid. Pisces Iscariot does have some great songs on it. Starla is a great SP b-side. GBV, yeah. those guys just like to let it all hang out. They do not have the ability to say no. Which in some respects is cool. I like the approach they have of just throwing everything out there and letting the fans be the judge. If you want the Adorable stuff, let me know. I can tell you were to get it....it might be somewhere that starts with the letter m. :)
