Take Me Out To The Ballgame
Ok,You might ask, "What do Baseball and Jazz have to do with each other?"Well, there are a couple of tracks on this "Baseball: A Film by Ken Burns" PBS soundtrack that really swing! My favorite is "Take Me Out to the Ballgame":http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/wma-pop-up/B000005J2P001029/ref=mu_sam_wma_001_029 performed by Carly Simon. Although she did a version of this great American song back in the 1980s, the new version she recorded for the Ken Burns sountrack contains the "verse" to the song. For those of you under 40 who don't know what the "verse" of a song is, think of it as an introduction (either spoken or sung) that is not repeated again during the song. The rest of the "words" in the song are called the "chorus." Most songs today don't contain any verse, only a chorus.Another great performance on this soundtrack is Natalie Cole singing, "Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball?":http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/wma-pop-up/B000005J2P001020/ref=mu_sam_wma_001_020 Natalie belts this old hit out only like she (or her father) could. There are many period performances including "Joltin' Joe Dimaggio" by the Les Brown Orchestra performed by Betty Bonney. "Baseball Boogie" by Mabel Scott, and many others worth picking up this CD if you like Baseball and Jazz.Sadly, it's not on iTunes, but there are some great deals on used copies on Amazon.Addition: I did a little research. Carly Simon is singing the original 1908 version of the song which has the following lyrics:Katie Casey was baseball mad,She had the fever and had it bad.Just to root for the home town crew,Ev'ry souKatie blew.On one Saturday her young beauCalled to see if she'd like to goTo see a showBut Miss Kate said "No,"I'll tell you what you can do:"Take me out to the ballgame.."Note: A "sou" is a nickname for a penny or nickle used early in the late 19th and early 20th Century. The lyrics in Carly's version are slightly modified to "Every Cent that Katie spent" as almost nobody knows what a "sou" is anymore.
