"Pompton Turnpike, that's A very famous Jersey roadway Full of country charm. Pompton Turnpike, leads you To a place not far from Broadway, Still it's on a farm. ".....Lyrics from "Pompton Turnpike" by Charlie BurnetThere are two turnpikes in New Jersey, the hideous New Jersey Turnpike and the Pompton Turnpike! Now known as "Route 23" or "Pompton Ave." The Pompton Turnpike was originally a beautiful toll road that passed through rural areas of Northern and Western New Jersey to get folks into New York.Anyway... Enough Jersey history. This 2006 Verve Japan re-issue of a 1954 Oscar Peterson album is a real find for someone who appreciates piano jazz. Oscar Peterson (1925- ) was 30 years old when he recorded this album and, some might say, was nearing his peak.Besides the "Pompton Turnpike Song," some of my favorites are "Cherokee," "Singin' in the Rain," and "The Continental." Folks, piano jazz just doesn't get any better than this! One thing I discovered by reading the liner notes is that Oscar Peterson, through some terrible and unfortunate circumstance of birth, is canadian! However, he overcame the circumstances of his birth and went on, and continues to be, a great influence on American Jazz music. This CD cost me $30 USD on Amazon, so you probably have to be a big fan to want to layout that kind of cash. However, you're in luck.... I just checked on iTunes and there are at least 75 other Oscar Peterson albums, so give some of them a look. I think you will find that his best work was performed in the 1950s and 1960s.Cheers!
