No:481 ELVIS COSTELLO - ARMED FORCES (1979)

One of five Costello albums in my countdown, "Armed Forces" is the album that really broke his career into the mainstream. It's the album which, in my opinion has the greatest input from The Attractions, particularly Keyboardist Steve Naive who contributes some masterful embellishments. It includes two outstanding singles, "Oliver's Army", which Elvis would later admit borrows from Abba's "Dancing Queen", and my personal favourite and one of the best songs he's ever written "Accidents Will Happen".

Accidents Will Happen is a fantastic tune but most of Elvis early stuff was good...

I Agree his early stuff was great, but a lot those artist like the cars, B52's, Adam Ant,ect... early stuff was gold till something happened to their music later...

Classic Costello! He's a genius even now. I actually saw him live in '00 & it was just him, a piano & acoustic guitar. It was an amazing show & he was simply mesmerizing!

Aaah - takes me back. Yes, his early stuff is classic. I agree August, I think he's still an amazing musician, and occasionally I'll hear something that clicks with me. I suspect what has happened though, is that I was in the same place musically back then as he was, but we've both just gone in different directions since, so the appeal just isn't the same.

This album and Trust are my two most embedded EC albums. I'll probably be in my 80s or 90s, in whatever the equivalent of an old folks home is, and will be able to sing every song from those backwards and forwards. Then, of course, I'll get into an argument with some other aged Gen-Xer who will claim they know all of My Aim Is True and This Year's Model. There will be fisticuffs and one of use will lose our false teeth.

Looking forward to the rest of the countdown!

Augusts1 -- he and the imposters are going to be playing a giant suburban venue in my area. I am on the fence about shelling out the money to see him, though.
