Nominees for the fifth edition of the Canadian Folk Music Awards were announced today in Ottawa, and this year leading the pack is Joel Plaskett with four nominations! Joel has been recognized for Contemporary Album of the Year, Solo Artist of the Year, Producer of the Year and the Pushing the Boundaries Award.

The mission of the Canadian Folk Music Awards is to celebrate and promote Canadian Folk Music in all its forms. The Canadian Folk Music Awards Gala will take place on Saturday, November 21, 2009, at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Gatineau, Québec. CBC Radio 2 's Great Canadian Song Quest contest is where Canadians have the chance to share their passion, and nominate their favorite locations in the country to be celebrated in song. Canadians get the deciding vote on who writes and performs the songs from among Canada's finest musical icons and emerging stars. The end result is an incredible cross-country playlist, with 13 brand-new, original songs for Canada's playbook. Each artist will compose and record an original song, inspired by the locations chosen by Canadians from each province and territory.

NOTE: Voters have from today until Friday, Oct. 23, at 12 a.m. ET, to choose from a shortlist of the most popular places from each province and territory, and the artists they'd like to see create the song for those locations, by visiting http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/songquest/ . Once voting closes, the final 13 artists have four weeks to compose and record an original song, inspired by the most popular Canadian location from their province or territory.
