In honor of it's winning a Grammy nomination, here's Marshall Crenshaw's demo of the song from the underrated movie "Walk Hard." This version is from the DVD.
I know everyone talked about the Johnny Cash comparisons, but I hear Roy Orbison here too. It's also a kick to hear Crenshaw trying on a new vocal mannerism.
The reason songs like this are successful is not just because they're funny but because they're actually good songs. I thought a lot of the songs on "Walk Hard" were well-written songs, particularly this one.

One can imagine Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison grinding their teeth because they didn't have hits with this song, but, so what?; if Crenshaw wrote it, he gets to have it. By "new vocal mannerism" you probably mean that he sings more baritone than tenor. I haven't heard this or seen the film before, but I'm with you oh the idea that the key criterion here is "good music" or "well-written," meaning that the melody, rhythm, chord progression and execution are shaped in such a way as to coalesce, like chemicals in a test-tube, and be explosive rather than inert.
Huge Crenshaw fan here, who THOUGHT he owned everything the man has released, but nooooo.....
Thanks for this. Although it's a kick I much prefer him as a tenor.
