In-Store Play

I was in my local "Newbury Comics":http://www.newburycomics.com Friday night after work, using a $15 gift card I'd received for Christmas, when it happened.Once again, I had been sucked in by what the stafff was playing over their sound system, and was 'audio-brainwashed' into buying the cd...This time it was 'Moon Pix' by Cat Power. I'd always enjoyed her songs when I'd heard them at parties or wherever, but had never bought anything of hers to date. But after hearing it as I rummaged through the cd stacks, and then listening to the complete album at home, I am very glad I did. She sounds a lot like Beth Orton (who I love), and now I have a 'new' artist to obsess over and collect for the next few months. This has happened in the recent past with Pharoah Sanders (summer '05) and Herbie Nichols (on Nantucket in late October), two jazz greats. It's why I LOVE music stores, especially used record (and cd) stores. Being turned onto artists I might not have run across on my own.

  1. lemontwist says I'd heard some Cat Power every now and again but was never really that impressed. I heard again yesterday and was captivated. Funny how sometimes you can hear stuff without getting it, and then all at once you fall in love. :)
