MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist: The Minutemen
Album: Double Nickels On The Dime
Track: History Lesson-Part II

My best friend was a skateboarding punk rocker... that was pretty common at Commie High School in the late 80's, and the fact that he was listening to: Rush, Fishbone, All, Tom Petty and the Minutemen wasn't all that uncommon either. My first year of high school the two bands that I heard the most about were The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Metallica.... but I never seemed to catch on to some of the band that he listened to, that didn't matter as we had bonded over GI Joe figures and Learning Disabilities when we were pre teens....

So lately I have been listening to the Minutemen a lot. I don't know why it took so long for me to get it with them. I had read about them in the book 'Our Band Could Be Your Life' (a title taken from one of their lyrics), and saw the We Jam Econ DVD last spring. I have had Double Nickels on the Dime for a couple of years now and it just didn't hook me. Looking back, there have been a lot of bands that didn't suck me in when I first heard them, The Misfits, The Damned and The Replacements are all groups that I shrugged off when I first heard them..

This makes me wonder who am I shrugging off now that I will be into a year from now, 3 years from now, or even a decade from now?... hum.....
