Yep that’s right, the finest Johnny Cash meets Horror band on the planet can be found in the wilds of Sweden. The Coffinshakers, a 4-piece country rock group, playing both up tempo honky tonk numbers and ballads darker than what most Goth bands can muster. This is whisky drinking music, inspired by Johnny Cash, Lee Hazelwood as much as by Glen Danzig. I have to fess up and say that they are friends and that I released a 7” by them once upon a time. I have seen them live and they put on a great show, playing their music, with just the hint of seriousness and a hint of fun. They mostly sing about vampires, almost exclusively about Vampires in fact.
Horror Music is a feel and a theme not a sound and groups like the Coffinshakers remind me of that fact. When you really think about it, country music is perfect for horror themes, because it’s got a tradition of honesty, darkness and destruction often times wrapped into a story…..
Want more horror country…. Tomorrow Ghoultown….
