Love is a Mix Tape

Posted over 2 years ago
So I gave in a bought Love is a Mix Tape by Rob Sheffield... which our own "Terry Staunton":http://mog.com/Terry_Staunton here reviewed a while back.. It's about Mr. Sheffield (who was on NPR recently talking about the book) relationship with his late wife and the mix tapes that they made... for themselves and for each other... anyway as I read I have been just ran-dumbly skipping through my iTunes and playing songs with out really thinking... and suddenly I realize that I have just played a couple of songs that so how relate to my failed romances... songs that I associate with some woman that I was interested in, that things fell apart or went no where with.... very strange... It's a good book by the way.... I am tempted to delete the tracks in question from my computer, but as I recently deleted all the e-mails, threw away notes and letters, and disposed of everything that tied me to these women in any way, I wonder if I should just keep the music..... I guess that's enough... time for some....Sonic Reducer...

  1. brian1 says I say if your going to get yourself away from the other things that remind you of them, then delete the songs.

  2. dj ivi says even if you don't keep them on your computer - they will find you.... in a coffe shop, in best buy, on the radio. those songs will find their way into your life. :)

  3. mktackabery says I'm with ivi, they will always be around, but you can remove them from your immediate vicinity.

  4. lemontwist says What Ivy says is true. But if you still like the songs and keep playing them, eventually they'll have a new meaning and new memories assigned to them. They don't have to be forever lost to an ex.

  5. chucky says Eh. I'd delete them. After time you may want to hear them again and then you can go pick them up again.

  6. White and Nerdy says Do you have the CDs those songs came from? If so it's safe to delete those babies from iTunes...you can always reload them later if you want. OR if you're a masocist you can just get drunk and repeat those songs over and over again. And yes, the songs will surprise attack you later when you're outside the safety of your own home.

  7. thill says after terry's post i really wanted to read it and saw it was on order at my library. I thought the name sounded familiar and then i found that interview with him on NPR and realized he is on tons of shows on VH1...all those I love the 80's and such. i still have songs that remind me of my very first boyfriend. because i was 14 and he was my first boyfriend there are quite a lot: all of Purple Rain, Talking in Your Sleep by the Romantics, and Out of Touch by Hall and Oates. I don't think there is anyway to disengage he and these songs--wouldn't it be cool if there was? you wish for some sort of alzheimer's anyway that would let you enjoy those songs as they were meant to be enjoyed. i don't know if i agree with lemontwist on her thought that they don't have to be lost forever. they only way that they can be rescued is by some tragedy like getting in a car accident while listening to them......on that happy note.
