THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

As I walk Along I wonder.. what went wrong...

I spent part of the last couple of days watching the drama Friday Night Lights on -line (great show btw and I hate sports), and there were two times where songs that I know and I dig were used in the show, first 'Search and Destroy' by The Stooges was used during a murderball game and then a cover of Daniel Johnstones 'Devilstown' (which was perfect for the show) was played... the inclusion of those tunes on the show reminded me of the fact that movies and TV are places that I have heard and discovered music, and to that end I submit a short list of shows that I have included great songs on a regular basis...Crime Story... my brother commented some time ago that it had to be Crime Story that taught us to love rock and roll. Aside from the great updated version of Runaway by Del Shannon (and I am still looking for the '86 re-recording he did for the show) there was a lot of great pop and rock from the '60s included on the show.Homicide: Life on the Street... I will never forget the way that NIN was used on one episode of the show, it was magic, it gave me chills and it was one of the first times that I noted cutting edge then-current music being used on a show, and this is something that Homicide did all the time... I have to also mention that as a show the first couple of seasons had a lot of allusions to the Seattle grunge movement, in many ways it was the Greenriver of TV drama. It set down a blue print, often overlooked, for those it spawned and informed (NYPD Blue, The Shield, The Wire) have become the standards for cop dramas. Also much like grunge which killed good time party rock by going back to the basics, Homicide brought the cop show back from the land of soap opera and dealt with the reality of dealing with death..The Wire: if you haven't seen this show, you are missing out, it's simply one of the best shows ever on tv, and it's used a lot of great music, starting with the use of a Tom Waits song as it's theme...Thoughts, Comments, Spare cough syrup.....

  1. lemontwist says Daria had some kickin' music in it. And it was really one of the only TV shows that I watched regularly.

  2. chucky says Oddly enough, I love the music tie-ins on Scrubs. But, I would never, never listen to any of the music on Scrubs outside of watching it.

  3. 1234chainsaw says Homicide is classic stuff. Most of the show consists in just guys talking about life. Usually this would be cringe-inducing but the script writing is so good that it keeps you hooked. I've been playing serious catch-up with the Wire over the holidays. How is it that the two best US cop shows are both set in Baltimore? The Young Ones had pretty good tunes.
