WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The Wind Hammers into your soul slip inside and know the truth… we are all mad…

Posted over 3 years ago
Madness, that’s what the more up tight puritanical forces would call those of us who embrace the terror and horror… really guys and girls it’s that we are either afraid of or have resigned ourselves to death, even the little death… but madness it is, cause we are all terminal.. and I bet that the Buddy Holly of Psychotronic Music Roky Erickson knows that better than most of us. Psychedelic pioneer and victim of the bazaar psychological medical industrial complex known as the State of Texas Roky has written some of the weirdest and most beautiful Psychotronic music ever. He has the classic song writing chops and I like to think of him as the Howard Phillips Lovecraft of the Psychotronic Sounds. He is an influence on so many of the others that have come to the alter of Rock since his first coming it’s incredible to think that he has lived such a marginal life… but then the real ones always do…. First as a member of the 13th Floor Elevators (they are playing in that opening scene from High Fidelity… which you have seen right? It is required viewing for all Rockfiends you know), then as a solo artist with several backing groups Roky is responsible for the following Psychotronic master works that you need to hear: The Wind and More, I walked with a Zombie, Two Headed Dog, Creature with the Atom Brain, Bermuda, Night of the Vampire, Burn the Flames, if you have Ghosts and Bloody Hammer… and then there is all his great non-horror music. What makes Roky special is that delicate touch that keeps things from getting too silly or too serious, the fact that he has that sense of melody and that odd insight to the bazaar. Am I alone in thinking that maybe he also really believes in some of this stuff? Anyway, there are several special days in the month of October, and today is one of them, Friday the Thirteenth, it is all Roky.Saturday the 14th bring…. 45 Grave…..

  1. leftoverking says "I-eye-eye-eye-eye-eye think of demons, with orange and black skin." lately his album "the evil one" has been the rally theme to get my co-worker and i through the second half of the work day. all we need ar a few bars of "Two headed dog" to brighten our spirits, and finish out our work without too much grumbling. that record rocks!... and it's funny at the same time, kinda like some horror flicks.

  2. Iren says I only wish that I could play cool stuff like that at work, I started in my new department and there were guys listening to their iPods and I was thinking cool, no more muzak..... so I go on vacation for two weeks and when I get back there are all these signs saying 'No MP3 Players with head phones, you can use the CD player if everyone agrees to what you want to play'... as a rule I try not to let most of my square co-workers know some of the stuff that I am into that they would thing was 'weird, strange, out there or scary'.... like rock music...

  3. RobP says Jesus, Iren, that's a scary work situation. Although I suppose it's typical, and we usually listen to the classic rock station where I work, but that's just because we're stuck with the radio and whoever works closest to the radio is in charge. Just a track I have to mention: Roky does a great version of Heroin, I don't remember what record it's on, but he's one of the few artists who could cover that song without seeming pretentious. And he nails it. Elevators are great, so is the best of his solo stuff, but it's like a friend of mine said to me after I walked out on a Butthole Surfers show: "You expect an acid band to be consistent?"

  4. leftoverking says i am a housepainter, so we kinda blast whatever we want, and keep the homeowners at bay. probably not my smartest business move, but fun. kind of reminds me of the atf blasting the guyutu monk chants at the branch dividian compound before they stormed it. you are inside, we are oustide. we are painting your house. we like some freaky music, you'd better stay in there and mind your own business. ha ha.

  5. drewdaman says Good insight into Roky's talents. I just pulled out his greatest hits album and am currently listening to it. My favorite track is The Interpreter, but Night of the Vampire is a close second. Oh, crap, then there's Wake Up to Rock 'n' Roll....man it's so frickin' raw but so darn tight. Okay, I'm going to read the other comments people made about your post. Roky On, drew
