WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

21 June 2006 www.mog.com/iren goes on line, 20 June 2009 Iren goes Idel

Posted 5 months ago

Three years, really? It's been that long, and it's been through all the ups and downs. I have been mostly lurking (reading posts by my trusted mogs) around here for the last couple of months. There are a number of reasons, my own blog, other writing that I have been working on (a lot of fiction), and really I am not feeling so mogtastic these days. A lot of the energy and flow of the early days has dissipated and I am seeing fewer and fewer people posting, sharing and talking about much besides the current hyped bands and artists of the moment and established 'Classic" bands and artists of the past.

I also don't feel the interaction is what it once was, and feel like mog has become indie rock centric. When I started posting on mog it was my hope that there was going to be more participation by music lovers from all over the music landscape, but I really haven't seen that in the couple of years. I don't see a thriving element of Metal fans, or Jazz fans for example. Too be honest the last couple of months I haven't been looking, and if I am missing out on those communities on mog please let me know.

Another thing that I haven't been feeling around here is a new influx of music fans hungry to discover. Every year hundreds of thousands of kids around the world head off to school or out on their own. A fraction of these kids find music is more than a momentary life style soundtrack to be consumed and placed in the background. I haven't seen them here.

One of the early desires for mog that I recall is for user generated content about artists and musicians, and I did participate in writing about a lot of people that were not current or classic. The thought that someone in a couple of years would be looking for someone thoughts about bands like: The Forbidden Dimension, Thee Ultra Bimboos, BOC, Radio Birdman or The Hellacopters and ask questions or reply to an old post was kind of exciting. The reality has been that posts seem to have a shelf life of a very short period of time, and while they are in the back log some where, they don't seem to get viewed or replied to all that much.

This third year of mog, dawns with me thinking back to those that have come and gone here. I have thought about giving up the mog ghost, and deleting, but I have three years of posts here and figure that enough of them count for something, so I am going to leave them up, but at the same time, I really don't see myself posting much here in the future. I haven't in the recent past, even though I saw concerts by Question Mark & the Mysterians and The Thermals, and missed the Ron Asheton Tribute Show and the Alejandro Escovedo.

I want to say thank you to all my readers, all those mogs who 'trusted' and followed me here. I want to take a moment to look back on all of those who have left, for what ever reason and say thanks. I hope that the EMCD didn't get to bad for everyone. If you find something that I wrote about that you liked, or run across and old post please post a comment and let me know.

I will be checking in on the new posts by my trusted mog, so I could be popping up here and there, but as of now, I am going to call this profile Idle.

Thanks everyone, take care of yourselves and be good to each other, and most of all— keep your ears open to new sounds.

Eric

Eric, I think it says a lot that I only saw this post because you pointed it out to me. I can't help but feel that MOG has unravelled. It's been a great ride, but it feels like it is coming to an end.

I like the 3 songs you have on your Myspace. You know, to post on MOG you only need say a few words about the artist, drop a few links in and we can do the rest. It doesn't have to be a chore each time.

I would love to hear more of your favorites of the past as well as present. I bet you'd get just about as much interaction and comments as you are getting on each restlesskind post, especially if you expanded your trusted Moggers. Community is out there- you just have to look for us.

I'll be combing your posts and playlists for some tasty nuggets, because I am quite a Rockfiend myself, as well as a power pop addict and an alt-country/rockabilly kind a guy. Kevin can attest to that. :)

As a devoted MOGger who greatly appreciates the thoughtful and diligent contributors here (that means you, too, iren), I hope you do continue to lurk and even occasionally post. Time constraints and general fatigue can get to anyone, but MOG is too valuable a resource for me to consider dropping out of it. In any case, all the best!

Hey Eric, as someone who started off by reading all of your horror punk posts and getting tipped off to loads of new music by you, I am happy you are not deleting your profile.

The first blog site I ever used was Friendster but it was too random for me and I was pleased to find Mog and be able to focus in on music. I think I rode the wave of excitement over blogging itself, which has now peaked. Maybe the blogging community will now sort itself out and those who truly want community and communication will hang in there.

Wherever you blog, I will try to find you!
