More thoughts:The new record makes me think of early Hellacopters... which maybe it should cause the Hellacopters are fans and friends of at least Dez Tek from Birdman... Both groups have been up front about the impact of The Stooges and The MC5 on their music, so maybe it's also a case of the fact that they are all living in the same Hi Energy Music space...How do I know that the 'Copters are friends with Dez Tek, it's simple I was there when they first met and played a show together... It was the summer of 2002 and the 'Copters were on tour across the USA, they were playing the Big D (Detroit) and one of the opening acts was Scott Morgan's Powertraine feat. Dez Tek. At that time Reanimator Records had just closed down but my brother and I had ties to Powertraine (as they were a local band feat. Chris 'Box' Taylor from Mazinga) and we were friends of Kenny Hellacopter (having hung out with him in Stockholm several times).... So we were with both bands when they played WDET (public radio in Detroit) and went with them to the club where the show was being held. I watched as Dez Tek and the 'Copters met in the studio and chatted, and then after the sound check we all ended up getting food at the same place.... I don't want this to turn into I know the rock guys, cause really, these guys are friends and people that we know socially....Anyway if you want to see a little of that day there is a Hellacopters DVD about their tour where you can see my brother taking photos and what not...I guess what I am saying is that it shouldn't be a shock that a new Birdman CD would show signs of influence from of those that have been inspired by them....anyone else have new thoughts on this new record?

  1. RobP says What's the name of the DVD? I may have already seen your bro w/o knowing. Is Tek on any of the Cream of the Crap stuff? I know Scott Morgan is on Slow Down Take A Look - great track - and possibly more. I got the first Radio Birdman lp from a free if you spend so many dollars pile a long time ago - book em Danno, murder one.

  2. Iren says The DVD is called Goodnight Cleveland, and as for as I know Dez Tek has not played on any of The Hellacopters studio stuff. Scott Morgan has not only recorded with them but written a few tunes for the band and Played in The Hydromatics and The Solution with Nicke... I am a little sheepish in noting that even though I grew up in Ann Arbor, and unknowingly went to High School with Scott Asheton's step-daughter that I never heard of and took note The Stooges or The MC5 let alone Radio Birdman until Jake Starr from the band Adam West started talking about them, and the first Birdman stuff I heard was the Flattery Tribute CD's that Jake and his buddy Dave released.... all that amazing music with local ties, with many of the prime movers in the scene walking down the streets all the time and I had no clue. I am sure that a few of the weirdos that I went to school with (and we went to an alternative school that today would be thought of as a magnet school) knew, but it wasn't talked about... funny everyone seemed to busy to listening to Metallica and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers back when I was in 9th grade in 1987... oh, and then there were a bunch of people wearing what I later found out was a Devillock hair cut and I recall a lot of P.I.L. shirts at the same time... Of course my friends and I were into some top 40 pop, a lot of pre-alt stuff, some classic rock, a dash of punk, a bit of metal and a lot of Cheap Trick....

  3. RobP says Yeah, I saw Goodnight Cleveland, some good footage, but I borrowed it (and had to return it - the same friend had A QOTSA dvd I also had to borrow). Doesn't Ann Arbor also have a Stooges wax museum?

  4. Iren says Stooges Wax Museum.... yeah, that's the ticket.... I think they tore it down and put up a starbucks, or a Borders... maybe it was a pot belly same-which shop... No wait it was in the basement of Skool Kids Records which they booted out of town and put a hot topic in it's place.....

  5. fastnbulbous says I bought the CD on Wednesday and have listened to it about a half dozen times. My first thought was how they sound like a young band! However, the songs aren't really jumping out at me. About three stand out, and the rest aren't too memorable. But then, that's no different really than their original albums. I played a few cuts pretty heavily on my old radio show, but they could be boring at times. The Saints blew them away. Still, it sounds pretty great.
