Three Dog Thursday

Posted over 4 years ago
The first tune I ever heard from Three Dog Night was 'Liar', which I heard on an AM station in Longview, Washington on a summer vacation at my grandparents. Well, after hearing that particular tune, I made up my mind that the first LP purchase of my fledgling music-buying career was going to be 'Naturally' - the album that contained the aforementioned tune. When I got back home to SoCal later that summer, I begged my mom to take me down to White Front (K-Mart-ish department store from that era), so I could plunk down my not-so-hard-earned allowance money for the album. And WOW, from the opening Floyd Sneed drum salvo in the intro to "I Can Hear You Calling", to the closing fade of 'Joy to the World', I was stone HOOKED. I wore that sucker out, and I still love the fantastic combo of three incredibly vocalists, and a backing band with chops to spare.

  2. Inscrutable says Glad you enjoyed it...I have the album, and seriously, there's not a bad cut on it. My favorite vocalist of the three was/is Chuck Negron - he is now a born-again Christian and is no longer with the group.

  3. dermahrk says "Liar" was written by, and first recorded by, the group Argent, featuring Rod Argent, the keyboardist and composer for the Zombies. It's on their first LP and you might want to check out their version as well.

  4. Inscrutable says You know what - I knew that, but shamefully, I've either never heard their version, or don't remember it. I know I heard a significant amount of Argent in my younger years, but these days all I recall is the hyper-dull 'Hold Your Head Up', and "God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You', which I liked, and I also recall Kiss covering. Thanks for the message and the recommendation...

  5. dermahrk says Hey, I must agree with you that Argent recorded a lot of boring prog-rock, particularly as time went by. Being a HUGE Zombies fan, I checked out the first LP or two and, while I loved a few tracks reminiscent of the Zombies, thought the rest was crap. I bombed after those first two or three LPs. But both "Liar" and "God Gave Rock and Roll To You" (which Colin Blunstone and Rod now do in concert as the Zombies) are great songs.
