I'm still around. Though y'all'd like to know. And yes, I just used a double contraction. Somewhere, my fifth grade English teacher felt a chill rush down her spine, and she doesn't know why...

Indiebass = MIA, plus CSS rules

Sheesh. It's been so long since I MOGged. And i have no excuse at all. I've just ben MOG-lazy. And for that, I apologise. Awesomeness after the jump.

In any event, in my constant need to let you know the latest band I can't get enough of, I give you CSS (aka: Cansei De Ser Sexy). Here's what you need to know: They're Brazilian, their name means "Tired of being sexy" which is something they heard Beyonce say in an interview, which they all agreed was one of the dumbest things anyone has ever said. (Personally, I am never tired of being sexy.) They are high energy, goofy but not to the point of ridiculousness and deliciously topical. But don't read this, go buy the album, dance like no one's watching and TRY to wipe a smile off your face.

My track pick? Art Bitch, which musically is only about average for the album but lyrically is so clever and biting and I can't help but make it the recommended track. You can listen to it HERE

The Mammals - Aug 26, Durham, NH

Yes, I've been on the road and busy for a month. (BAD MOGGER! BAD!) However, I aim to atone for my sins (Right time of year for it too, no?) with some badass postings and a renewed commitment to the greatness that is this space.

First post: in my whirlwind trip around the Northeast, I happened to fall ass-backwards into my friend Ri taking me to a show with a band I'd never heard of: The Mammals. Needless to say, I'm lucky he did. The Mammals played Saturday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. as part of the Music in the Meadow concert series put on by the Mill Pond Center for the Arts and the Stone Church Music Club.

One of the things that made the show so great was the venue. Have you ever seen the stages they set up in Nashville or Branson, Missouri where there's fake trees on the stage, and windows set up behind the band and whatnot? Well this was that, except for real and really outside. The stage was set up against a, I-shit-you-not, side of a barn, and I guess in the barn was the "backstage" area. There was a gorgeous old tree growing in front of the left side of the stage and perfectly framing the performance area. Add that to the crystal clear night sky above, the almost pornographically clean air, and the great crowd who had gathered and the concert turned into one of those experiences I'll remember for the rest of my life.

The music varied from high energy and twangy to very subtle kind of... I don't want to say "slow core" but a basic indie rock groove. There was certainly some Spanish influence to some of the songs (one of the band members grew up in South America) and it was good to hear it in the background of some of the more twangy pieces as well as some straight up Cuban folk pieces. It was an ecclectic show, to be sure, but they never didn't sound like "The Mammals" if that makes sense. There was something that definitely tied all the music together, even though it was all so different. As a band, I don't know I've seen a group of people play together so tight. From a musicians perspective, they're worth seeing just for their dynamic. They hold amazing stage presence and aren't afraid to interact with the crowd and have people come up and dance or whatever.

Bottom line: if you get a chance, see this band. I don't own any of their albums (though I probably will, and I'm sure they're great) but they can't possibly capture the raw energy of the live show.

This is really my first concert "review", but I'd like to think of it more as just gushing over a great band my friend showed me. And now I've shown you; check them out!

I feel bad, my moggin' has been kept to a minimum for the last couple of weeks. I've been on a quick vacation, and i'm heading out on another. However, I saw a great band called "The Mammals" that i'll Mog about when I get back. Until then, it's out to the wilds of Western Michigan.

Happy Birthday Tori Amos!!!

A very big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Tori Amos! While as a guy I remain slightly embarrassed about my love for all things Tori, I nonetheless will use my MOG as a forum to wish her and her fam the best for the coming year and all the years to come. I can only imagine that the folks over at The Dent are going to party it up like it's 1999, but as for me, I'll throw on some Little Earthquakes, sit back and let the piano take me back.

20 bonus points to anyone who knows what song my lyric to the right comes from. It's a Tori, 'natch. No googling, and I think we can all be comfortable within the confines of the honor system.

A Brand New Addiction

So my friend back in The D turned me on to The Radio Trip. "The Radio Trip" is on every other Saturday night (Sunday morning) from 2:00 to 4:00 AM on 89.5 FM WPKN (Bridgeport, CT) and 88.7 WPKN (Montauk, NY). However, after a certain point in time, all the broadcasts are available online, broken up into neat quarter hour segments, which i appreciate. It's a weird mix of standup comedy, audio snippets and music, which is generally mostly electronic and ambient. Think Moby-esque. In any event, check it out! You can tell it's on when it's on, because they get away with a lot of ridiculousness, but it's just the thing for a guy like me AND i don't have to wait until 2am to hear it.

The Knife

All right, so I've been sweating The Knife pretty hard for a while now, and I figured it was about time I posted some The Knife love. I am ashamed to admit that i only became aware of The Knife because of the Sony Bravia ad with the José González version of "Heartbeats". I don't know what it is, but Sweden seems to be pumping out great new artists like every five minutes these days. And while i was typing this, I just realized... Annie, Abba, Ace of Base... The Swedes like bands that start with the letter "A". weird! Anyways, check out the awesomeness that is "Heartbeats" by The Knife. You'll be glad you did!

Is there a Doctor on the Train?

So, i was listening to one of my very favorite podcasts, Radio Clash and he played a cut by Lionel Vinyl called, I believe, Is There a Doctor on the Train? Unfortunately, Lionel has taken all his tunes off his website for the time being. Does anyone know where I might be able to get a copy of the song?
I'm BACK!!!

after some difficulties with the MOG account, and with a LOT of help from Alan at the MOG brain, I am finally able to log in to my MOG.

I can say as a followup, the Belle and Sebastian show ROCKED hard and for the most part... consistantly. I was really glad i got to see them live, and i can't wait until they come back again... i'm not sure the festival, outdoor seating was a great venue for them, but as a band, they were definitely "on" and that's what's important. Ted Leo + the Pharmacists I had seen before and naturally didn't disappoint. I might even say i had the most fun watching them, but the Merriweather Post Pavillion wouldn't let him play more than 30 minutes. Which was kind of sucky, but he filled those 30 minutes with some solid rocking. Broken Social Scene was kind of disappointing. I wasn't really into them before the show and they didn't do anything to win me over. They weren't bad; they were just 'meh'. Most disappointing was that they brought out one of the girls from Stars, who i really like, but her voice was I think a little strained or something. It was like, I know her voice is good... I've heard it be good before, but it was just weak that night.

All in all, i am recommitted to seeing some more shows... it's been too long, and I'm feeling out of practice. Any recommends for the DC area?

Going to see Belle and Sebastian

I just realised I am going to see Belle and Sebastian this Saturday, July 8th in COLUMBIA, Maryland's Merriweather Post Pavilion with Broken Social Scene and Ted Leo & the Pharmacists! I got these tickets so long ago that it kind of snuck up on me. I've seen Ted Leo before and he def rocks my socks. While this my kill my indie cred, I've never actually seen Belle and Sebastian live before and i'm looking forward to it. I've always thought seeing Belle and Sebastian live was kind of like spotting a Sasquatch. Anyone else heading out to the show? Any advice for a B&S first timer?

I know this is a music-centric site, but this is devistating to those of us who would check in and get 'boomed every morning over a cup of coffee at work. It seems like the story is more complicated than it looks, and I'm sure we'll find out more as time goes on, but in the meantime, i'll just be sad. No Amanda, no Rocketboom.

What's the deal?

Can someone tell me what the big deal with Tapes n' Tapes and the Arctic Monkeys is? I personally find them to be totally "good" bands, and i don't kneejerk skip their music when it comes on, like you would with, say, Nickelback. But there are so many people out there heralding one or both of these bands as the saviors of modern music. I even heard someone say that the Arctic Monkeys' album was one of the three best British albums of all time. Really? That means if you take an album of each of the following bands, you need to leave one out for the Arctic Monkeys: The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Clash. I'm just looking at this objectively. Feel free to flame away, or please PLEASE tell me what i'm missing, because i'd genuinely like to know!
