I have been watching a lot of Martial Arts films as of late. Most recently Fists of Legend starring Jet Li. I am usually a huge fan of 70's and 80's films, Jet Li has something earlier pics don't have. That's style. When I say style I don't mean fighting style (Monkey, Tiger, Crane, and my personal fave Iron Frog, LOL) I mean style. The whole choreography and expression is just ummmm ... fantastic.

Li uses a style called Wushu. A early Communist effort to suppress more violent martial arts Wushu was an attempt to bring various schools and disciplines under one umbrella. Part dance, part gymastics, part Sanda (a more aggressive, self defensive style of hand to hand). Wushu really is a culmination of many very old fighting styles brought together to help train a nation. And it is altogether gorgeous. So tonites Salutations are Cantonese. And the tunes provided by The B 52's and Joy Division. For no other reason than, I thought they sounded good together.Enjoy!

  2. I am says (eyes roll back in head, making drool noise, and twitching leg like a dog getting his sweet spot scratched) I am all over that. Unfortunately, "Classics" means 3 Bruce Lee movies and a Sonny Chiba mob flick. I'll give it a watch. They may surprise me.

  3. Rawkkiddoh says from what I saw, it was not going to be your basic run of the mill Bruce Lee film collection. It looks like its going to be a real dedication to the genre. Hero is on right now, and tomorrow they will be showing House Of Flying Daggers

  4. mktackabery says two great tastes that go great together (musically that is). I must confess, I get truly bored with martial arts films - I just skip to the fights and/or choreography, and I have missed a lot of Jet Li's films because the plots seem, well, stupid. But he's quite the artist.

  5. I am says Mk you have to check out Once Upon A Time In China. There are 3 or 4 films about a chinese folk hero named "Wong Fei Hung":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wong_Fei_Hung. While not entirely factual I think these films have decent (not great) plot lines and action. Jet Li does a wonderful job in all of them.
