Tell Me La Lupe Doesn't Make You Hot, And I Will Say You Are Lying ....

Posted over 4 years ago

Man, whatta voice. La Lupe or Lupe Victoria Yolí Raymond, was a charismatic Cuban born singer whose career lasted 32+ years. She sang son montuno, bolero, boogaloo, merengue, salsa and just about every other Caribbean style of music there is.She sang in her native Cuba before she was exiled to the states in 1962. It was in NYC she was discovered by "Mongo Santamaria":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongo_Santamaria who in 63 did a remake of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man". In 1964, Lupe debuted with "El Rey" Tito Puente. Through Tito's guidance La Lupe began to explore her creativity. In 1969 she was the first Latin female artist to sell out Carnegie Hall (not Madison Square Gardens). In the next few posts that I write you start to see musical connections. One person working here, one person working there. And somehow it always leads back to Miles Davis. Enjoy!

  3. ivylander says Can't play this at work so don't know what tune you're flogging here, but La Lupe is as foot-to-the-floor as any Latin singer ever. Voice isn't quite in the Celia Cruz class, but mean, she means every single word of it. Love her. Thanks for giving her props.

  5. I am says La Lupe doesn't get much credit outside of the Latin music scene. Inside she is considered one of the best. The video show a little and I mean a little of her stage presence. She is a highly animated singer and it comes through in her live offerings. A little factiod here: Celia Cruz was a teacher before she began singing. La Lupe wanting to follow in her footsteps became a teacher also, before she started to sing. I am glad to turn you all on to her.

  8. 2Serenity says Thank you for the history lesson. I was unaware of Lupe but I know much about Celia Cruz because of Telemundo. I used to watch her back in the day not knowing what the heck she was saying - Celia Cruz - but it sounded good to me! Muchas gracias!

  10. Cody B says New to me. Loving that video and the hotness when she's singing in spanish. Can't wait to see the connections, but stating in the late 50's there was a whole lot of it going on here in NYC. I guess with everybody living so close it could not be helped, and besides, many feel Cuban music forms are the basis for quite a bit of American music. Looking forward to the posts.

  11. I am says Here is the piece Mongo Santamaria is most famous for. He played this track with El Rey (Tito), but it is Trane who gave it wings.

This is an Impulse recording. On the John T. and Johnny Hartman collaboration Johnny Hartman sang vocals for Afro Blue, but sadly it never made it to the album. No tape exists for that song and it has always been known as the "Missing Track". One connection made.
