Man, whatta voice. La Lupe or Lupe Victoria Yolà Raymond, was a charismatic Cuban born singer whose career lasted 32+ years. She sang son montuno, bolero, boogaloo, merengue, salsa and just about every other Caribbean style of music there is.She sang in her native Cuba before she was exiled to the states in 1962. It was in NYC she was discovered by "Mongo Santamaria":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongo_Santamaria who in 63 did a remake of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man". In 1964, Lupe debuted with "El Rey" Tito Puente. Through Tito's guidance La Lupe began to explore her creativity. In 1969 she was the first Latin female artist to sell out Carnegie Hall (not Madison Square Gardens). In the next few posts that I write you start to see musical connections. One person working here, one person working there. And somehow it always leads back to Miles Davis. Enjoy!

This is an Impulse recording. On the John T. and Johnny Hartman collaboration Johnny Hartman sang vocals for Afro Blue, but sadly it never made it to the album. No tape exists for that song and it has always been known as the "Missing Track". One connection made.
