WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Born, Never Asked .....

Today (June 5, 1969) is my 38th birthday. My first with MOG. I must say it has been good a good birthday so far, but the day is young. My kids got me a membership the "Lehigh Valley Amateur Astronomical Society":http://www.lvaas.net/. I know, I know the first thought you had after seeing that is "GEEEEK". Well you are right, but the coolest thing about membership is access to some super cool telescopes. Most notably a 40" Cassegrain which is supposedly the largest privately owned scope in the US. I am more interested in the 10 foot dish radio telescope and doing planetarium shows.
Anyway I got something fun to do. Head on out to the "Those Were The Days":http://www.440.com/twtd/ website. Search your birthday and share the results. You can pick and choose what to share, I am not asking for everything. Here is my results:
Events for June 51783 - Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier were brothers. They made their first balloon ascension on this day. This means that their balloon went up, successfully, we might add, to 1,500 feet for about ten minutes.1865 - Rev. Sabine Baring-Gould listened quietly and with pride as his composition, Onward Christian Soldiers, was presented for the first time in Horbury, England.1876 - For one thin dime, visitors to Philadelphia’s Centennial Exposition were able to buy foil-wrapped bananas, a popular taste treat in the United States. We tried one as an experiment for lunch today -- and heartily agree! It is especially interesting how the aluminum foil creates a kind of buzzing feeling on your teeth as the banana gets chewed up!1927 - Johnny Weissmuller set a pair of world records in swimming events. Weissmuller, who would soon become Tarzan in the movies, set marks in the 100-yard, and 220-yard, free-style swimming competition.1952 - ‘Jersey’ Joe Walcott defended his heavyweight-boxing title by out-pointing Ezzard Charles in Philadelphia, PA. Jersey Joe would lose the heavyweight crown four months later to Rocky Marciano.1956 - Elvis Presley made his second appearance on Milton Berle’s Texaco Star Theatre. Presley sang Heartbreak Hotel, his number one hit. The TV critics were not kind to Elvis’ appearance on the show. They panned him, saying his performance looked “like the mating dance of an aborigine.”1959 - Bob Zimmerman graduated from high school in Hibbing, MN. Zimmerman was known as a greaser to classmates in the remote rural community, because of his long sideburns and leather jacket. Soon, Zimmerman would be performing at coffee houses at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and later, in Greenwich Village in New York City. He would also change his name to Bob Dylan (after poet Dylan Thomas, so the story goes).1964 - David Jones and The King Bees had their first record, Liza Jane, released by Vocalion Records of Great Britain. Less than a decade later, we came to know Jones better as David Bowie.1967 - Ongoing political problems (control and reunification of Jerusalem, access through the strait of Tiran, control of the West Bank of the Jordan River, etc.) came to a head, causing a major outbreak of hostilities (later referred to as the Six Day War) between Israel and Egypt. The Israelis, who had at first met strong Egyptian resistance, destroyed 50 of Egypt’s tanks and stormed through Gaza, and this was only Day One; the beginning of a quick and ferocious victory for the Israeli ground and air forces, led by Defense Minister Moshe Dayan; and a humiliating defeat for Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser. Both sides are still blaming the other for firing the first shot.1968 - While celebrating his victory in the California Democratic presidential primary in Los Angeles, Senator Robert F. Kennedy (brother of assassinated U.S. President John F. Kennedy) was shot in the head. He died the following day. The gunman, Sirhan Sirhan, was later convicted of the murder.1973 - The first hole-in-one in the British Amateur golf championship was made this day -- by Jim Crowford of Winston-Salem, NC.1985 - Steve Cauthen rode Slip Anchor to the winner’s circle. He was the first American jockey in 79 years to win the Epsom Derby, Great Britain’s premier flat racing event.1987 - Ted Koppel and guests discussed the topic of AIDS for four hours on ABC-TV’s Nightline. It is believed that this was a record for the longest live-TV broadcast, other than of space coverage and political conventions.2004 - Former U.S. President Ronald Reagan died at his home in Los Angeles, CA. He was 93 years old and had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease since at least late 1994. Reagan won the Republican Presidential nomination in 1980. Voters troubled by inflation and by the year-long confinement of Americans in Iran swept the Republican ticket into office -- and the Democratic ticket out (Reagan won 489 electoral votes to 49 for President Jimmy Carter).

  3. I am says Thank you guys. You know, at first I was reluctant to tell you my birthday. The whole "too much information" thing, but when my kids gave me that card I was in heaven. The actual membership was about $45 dollars. So getting it myself would have been easy. Tonite my son Alex gave me a card with a card inside, everyone agreed that Baylor is the one who suggested it, and Lindsay, well she scribbled on the card, still she gave me a hug and sang "Happy Birthday" more or less. The story goes .... the membership was something I have wanted for about 6 years. Every Christmas, Anniversary, Birthday, and Dia De Los Muertos, and any other gift giving occasion I have made it easy for the folks around me. "What do you want?" they would ask, "Membership to LVAAS!" I would say. For 6 god damn years. I didn't get it for myself on principle. I am not living in "The Age Of Sail" ,though I so desperately wish I could, (side note: Was Fleet Week in NYC this week? If it was, How was it? And that would explain why Lizzie was in the city this particular weekend.) but I am living in the "Age Of Sight". Which is why I am so jazzed about exploring in a completely new way for me. Hey kris I'll bet you get some pretty black nights. Do you get "The Lights" where you are?

  6. Anna says Happy b-day! Much happiness, stars and music to you! This happened August 11th, my b-day: 1999 - A rare tornado touched down in downtown Salt Lake City, killing one person (the first recorded tornado death in the state’s history). Figures.

  10. I am says Thanks Folks, for the birthday wishes. @girlcrawl - the links are to cool. The articles reference to Zwicky who "used to refer to other astronomers at Mt. Wilson and Palomar as spherical bastards. Why ``spherical"? Because they were bastards any way you look at them." is to friggin' true. @kaleef - Happy Birthday to a fellow Gemini. I must say that I am a textbook example of my zodiac sign. @fist - Your on buddy. Bryant Gumbel, I am so sorry Sam. Quick cool story: As you may or may not know I was in the Navy for a time. Out on the water away from light pollution you can see a lot of things with just a good pair of binocs. We used to kill time by counting satellites that you can see with the naked eye. Orbiting pieces of junk flicker and they change color rapidly. Whereas stars shimmer and they don't change color. I lost count of the meteor showers I have witnessed some with occurrences of about 15 -30 a minute. That is a lot of falling stars. @kris - I would love to look at the sky from where you are. @anna - Since it was your birthday I am surprised that only *one* death occurred. Yuk, yuk. @ivy, kkiddo, cody - You guys are the best, Thanks. Nice cake kiddo. @doom - Laurie Anderson will always be ahead of her time. Just last week I got to see my kids sing in a school show on the same stage I had seen Laurie Anderson do a show 7 years earlier.

  11. fistula spume says I knew you were in the service but didn't know which area. Cool story. I can see it in my head. 15-30 Bryant Gumbel heads falling with great speed. All trying to tell you today's top stories with only so much time left before they plunge from visible sight.
