WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Premature Funk Injection ....

Posted about 1 year ago

I know it's not Friday. If this helps pull you through Wednesday, I will consider it a track well placed.

Long version folks. This puppy cashes in at almost 9 minutes.

Ya know, if I didn't buy the album, I wouldn't have found this gem.

Totally aces. And you reminded me that my Curtis box set still hasn't turned up since our move four fucking years ago. Hmm, maybe God's trying to tell me to clean out the garage over Labor Day weekend....

That box set is great, but nothing beats Curtis Live, which wich sounds like it was recorded in a small club.  I'm so envious of the audience members there.  Such a tegic end to Mr. Mayfield.

My favorite annecdote mentioned in the box set, how he was self taught and tuned his guitar to F, I think, and all these bad ass guitar players would come up to him while he was starting out and try to show him a thing or two.  They would get so frustrated with his tuning that they'd just put the guitar down and move on.

MOG hijacked my tag. It was supposed to say 'Curtis (1970)'.

I don't have 'Curtis Live' at least I don't think I do. Will have to seek that one out.

    Thanks Tyler.

Bill, it is Labor Day after all.

I would say, that up to about '74 just about all Curtis records are more than worthy. When disco kicked in the albums got a little softer and he grew more and more disaffected with the biz. His first 3 albums, Curtis,Roots, and Superfly are approached only by Al Green and Sly Stone as far as 70's R&B records go.  And I'm talking albums here, not individual songs.

I think you can get by with a compilation of his Impressions material, but among those tracks are some of the best R&B...no... best songs of pop music history: People Get Ready,You Must believe me, Choice Of Colors,Gypsy Woman, It's Alright, We're A Winner, Keep On Pushin', Amen, This Is My Country, and more.  Subtle but beautifully full arrangements incorporating orchestral and gospel themes, lyrics and message completely in synch with the civil rights movement, cascading vocal harmonies, and sneaky good guitar work delivered in taut two and half to three minute packages.

If you are not familiar with the Impressions I would check them out.

    Here's Choice Of Colors

Lyrics to This Is My Country:

Some people think we don't have the right
    To say it's my country
Before they give in, they'd rather fuss and fight
    Than say it's my country
I've paid three hundred years or more
Of slave driving, sweat, and welts on my back
    This is my country

Too many have died in protecting my pride
For me to go second class
We've survived a hard blow and I want you to know
That you must face us at last
And I know you will give consideration
Shall we perish unjust or live equal as a nation
    This is my country

And I know you will give consideration
Shall we perish unjust or live equal as a nation
    This is my country
