    Loved the film even though I'm not a huge Hanks fan.  Required "Understanding The Middle East/U.S. Foeign Policy Through Film" next to "Lawrence of Arabia", "Syriana" and "The Good Sheppard".

    Word.

    I'd see this for Hoffman, whom I adore.

    OK. I had to watch it TWICE cuz you really can't talk and must pay close attention, esp if you weren;t around for when this really happened in time. I lost track and too fell asleep the first time around. the second time around, watching with someone who knew the back story of what Charlie Wilson was all about, made it better...but still I'd rather recommend the sappy abigail breslin/ryan renolds flick "definitely/maybe" b4 this flick. (yes i saw that too)

    Woof.

    Sorry Charley. hehe.

    My take is;

    Once again I am enamored by my country. Being American is a purpose.

    I am ehhh on Hanks. Not my pick. Maybe the guy who did the first 'Walking Tall'. Joe Don Baker. At least someone taller.

    Hoffman is an actors actor. The South fits him well.

    The Cold War? Well you'll have to wait a bit more. Powell and the other pieces I did about the 'Red Scare' ain't easy reading.

    Foreshadowing? Maybe. A clear message, definitively.

    As a side note; McCarthyism is one of those topics I stick around for. That time is used as an example in textbooks that teach 'public opinion'.

    Watch 'Charlie Wilsons War' not because you want to know 'history'. Watch it because, this is how things work in government. Alliances and ball busting.

    How's that for a review?

    Not that I have to tell you anything, because I know you are much more versed in these subjects than I.  But I offer you these angles on the Cold War.

    Watch Red Dawn.  It's pretty horrible (and humorous too) but imagine being a little kid in the 80's and seeing such blatant red scare propganda (godless commies, internment camps, etc.), read about the guy who financed it (that's a story in itself, and a play I guess missed by Rove).  I'm amazed by it now, because it really shaped the way I viewed "The Russians" when I was little.

    At least with old Sci-Fi, tehre were communist over tones.  There's absolutely no subtlety in this one.  It's as subtle as The A-Team.  But it's a good example of the result of everything the Cold War was coming too.  Kinda like the Julia Roberts character (Black and Whiters).

    I would also recomend looking into the CIA's investment in the abstract expressionism of artists like Jackson Pollack, and how this new art stood as a beacon for what America was to the rest of the world (hint, they loved it's disassociation of any specific refference.  Some would say that this movement and subsequently Post Modernism was an attempt at making an exportable American culture to "sell" to the rest of the worl.  It's very interesting, because it's the first time in history America becomes the big dog in the Art world, and I know that it's not mere coincednce that it happens around the time that the Cold War is ramping up.
