What In God's Name Makes A Good Pop Song Good .......

Play now! Talk Later. This track comes by way of John Peel's Festive Fifty circa 1987. Barring the marketing machine, what gets a song into our good graces so much that we play it over and over again. Feel free to post your own examples. Hopefully your digging the 'The Colorblind James Experience', we know Peel did.

  1. scotfree says That's the sweet, comedic angle... Is it the R&B, keyboard driven, name droppin' to get everybody singing along to the chorus? Reunion - Life Is A Rock(But the Radio Rolled Me) ~kU0Q5vEBtAf.mp3~ Or, is it the name droppin', story telling genius, featuring the perfectly transparent backbone that you just gotta see your friends hear? Ray Stevens - Ahab the Arab ~issr48oLbBj.mp3~ Maybe it's self congratulatory uber-inane name droppin', propped up by seductively simple rhythms that make you forget time as a dimension? Jay Z - H to the Izzo ~NUUK9QHKeKB.mp3~ Most probaby, all the above in a talented hand lends results that our most primordeal essence just feels a bit of, oh, power. Todd Rundgren - Couldn't I Just Tell You ~0emUoZA3pwG.mp3~ To quote Todd himself, "And then there are songs that are like "Couldn't I Just Tell You" which are written to almost a classical pop form, in a way. It goes back to songs like "Substitute" and "Pictures of Lily" by The Who, and maybe songs by The Byrds, you know, the jangly sort of way that's done. But the song was written to be an example of that form. I don't know what that form is called. A power pop song. I don't know what the hell that means, but you know one when you hear one."

  2. Cody B says Repetition of a memorable chorus? Bass Solos? The Hook? The Form? That its an XTC song? That its a Big Star song? Repetition of listening on purpose or by accident? The shimmering guitar part in the Colorblind song at 5:35? Brightness? Complexity buried under Simplicity? I don't know.

  4. annieander says When you figure out what makes a good pop song, I recommend you file a patten it, bottle it and sell it. Then retire a millionaire. And since I gave you the idea...give me a percentage of the royalties...it's really the fair thing to do. But I really wouldn't have thought that this song is it...
