Oh So Heavy Rotation, The Cocteau Twins Plus Some ...

Posted over 2 years ago

Now playing on Chris Radio.

I have always had a love/hate relationship with the Cocteau Twins. Haircuts not withstanding.
I came to this groups about 2 years after they cut this EP in 1984.
Most of the time the Twins are way to heavy on my ears. Like much of the Jesus Mary Chain output, I found myself filtering out most of their songs. Most but not all.

'The Spangle Maker' always seemed to make it through to my memory. It was one of those tracks that made it to everyone's mix tape. Like a secret code for coolness and every time its played somebody says, "I love this song."
Come to think about it 'Spangle Maker' may well be the only song I do like from the Twins.

I found the lyrics for it but I can't tell if they're accurate. The way Liz Fraser attacks the word 'whistling' throws the last 3 stanzas up for interpretation. Hit play so you can sing along;

Cocteau Twins - The Spangle Maker

He's the droplets
He's that droplet on my truth
He's the spangle
He is that spangle maker

Oh, for that's
Awful that worked it shattering heads
She is his
She's his spangle baby
And the rest made sure it's the droplet

Singing
Broke and winded
Broke and winded
Whistling

Singing
Broke and winded
Broke and winded
Whistling

He's the droplets
He's that droplet on my truth
He's the spangle
He is that spangle maker
And the rest made sure it's the droplet

Singing
Broke and winded
Broke and winded
Whistling

Singing
Broke and winded
Broke and winded
Whistling

He's the droplets
He's that droplet on my truth
He's the spangle
He is that spangle maker
And the rest made sure it's the droplet

Singing
Broke and winded
Broke and winded
Whistling

Singing
Broke and winded
Broke and winded
Whistling

He's the droplets
He's that droplet on my truth
He's the spangle
He is that spangle maker

His part of the plan, it hadn't gone and there you are
It scattered then, it didn't bond and there you are
Oh, perhaps it's just the droplet singing
Broke and winded, I whistle and there you hide

His part of the plan, it hadn't gone and there you are
It scattered then, it didn't bond and there you are
Oh, perhaps it's just the droplet singing
Broke and winded, I whistle and there you hide

His part of the plan, it hadn't gone and there you are
It scattered then, it didn't bond and there you are
Oh, perhaps it's just the droplet singing
Broke and winded, I whistle and there you hide

I'm not going to send you to bed with that song on your mind instead I got two that will stay with you for awhile, but in a good way.

Just to lighten the mood before you turn out the lights.

If I wasn't so sleepy and stuck working now, we'd be having a "parting of the ways" over this. LOVE Cocteau Twins, which no doubt doesn't surprise you in the least. I'm taking second helpings of "The Spangle Maker" now as I prepare to sit through The Pink Opaque.

Although, I appreciate having lyrics for a Cocteaus song for the first time. I've always gone into a Cocteaus song without a great need to understand the lyrics, but this adds an extra level.

I was listening to a band the other day.  Dale, maybe you can help me w/ this?  I think it was The Engineers and they had this song that sounded soooo much like the Cocteau Twins.  It wasn't of course, but it made me realize how influential this band was.  Great song(s).

I have three albums by the Twins--Milk and Kisses, which is pretty good, Four-Calendar Cafe, which I don't care for much, and Heaven or Las Vegas, which I think it utterly brilliant.  But I can see what you mean by heavy.  It's not a metal sort of heavy, but the weight of layer after layer of unadulterated swirl and shimmer.  Not surprisingly, I think, the Twins could be listed as one of Flood Empty Lakes' bug influences.  Nate, our keyboardist and "other" main writer, is a HUGE fan--I mean, probably more than should be legal.  Hadn't heard this one before.  Not bad at all.  Makes me want to hear more.
