More Not So Random Facts .......

Posted about 1 year ago
To this day I don't know who my father is. I was told once when I was about 18. My feeling is, the male roll models in my life were my grandfather and my Uncle Bob. That was enough. My mom got married in the mid 80's to the man I now call dad. He is very much like my Uncle Bob, only older and less athletic. In a purely Freudian sense, my mom actually married her brother and I got my uncle to live with all over again. In the summertime, I like to sleep naked. My grandmother drank Schmidt's Bock Beer in the spring and early summer. She would buy 5-6 cases and it would last her though the 4th of July and by then bock wasn't made so she would switch to a lighter beer for the rest of the year until about Easter when Schmidt would start brewing it again. One of my fondest memories is of my grandmother and I sitting on our front porch, she with her Bock and me with my lemonade watching the gray clouds of a thunderhead come toward our house. Those rolling storms always amazed me.I had 2 horses growing up. One was a Morgan named Joker and the other was a Palomino named Fortune. Joker was given to us by the Greenall family who used to live in Fogelsville. The Greenall's had a carriage museum and John and his dad made new carriages by hand. One of the cooler things I remember about going to the Greenall farm was this one carriage that had the sole distinction of being the only U.S. carriage driven in the Coronation Parade for Queen Elizabeth in 1953. "John and his wife Sue are still active in the carriage business but they have since moved from Pennsylvania to Vermont.":http://www.vermontel.com/

  2. kristiana says You are indeed colorful, Chris, that's for sure. You know I love these nostalgic pieces. I can picture myself sitting right there on that porch with you and your Grandma. Think she would spare a Bock? My Mom's family are horse lovers too. Scottish descendants, lumbermen by the time they were settled in here. They had the work horses, but they were more than just practicalities. That passion than extended into harness racing. I have fond memories of my favorite Aunt taking me to the races and letting me make bets - no worries, I didn't develop any gambling addictions later on. ;) My Mom started bar-tending at the racetrack in about '89 or so, and she's still there. She also just recently bought her own racehorse and is very happy about it. Her father told her that when looking for a partner, they should love children and animals and be good with both. If not, there's something wrong with the picture, I suppose. Despite having those strong male role models around, did it bother you to not know who your dad was? Did you ever feel angry about it?

  3. Cody B says The nostalgic mood is sweeping hard lately, anything going on now that's making that so? The bucolic settings definitely have an edge though, an undercurrent that isn't all sunny. Digging it, Chris. Well Done.

  4. indiepixie says Chris- ur quite brilliant you are. today seems a day of a lot of Mog introspection. I too sleep naked often in summer. I grew up on the beach in Sydney and remain a sun baby- ppl in the US are waay to conservative about nudity. wish you could paint this one: One of my fondest memories is of my grandmother and I sitting on our front porch, she with her Bock and me with my lemonade watching the gray clouds of a thunderhead come toward our house. Those rolling storms always amazed me. I love watching storms like that from the beach- where in the deep sea in the horizon you can see the sparks of lightening spark down like fingers of God. if there is one. Kristiana- why do I keep finding your prophetic comments above my one? :) It's a shit gray day out. For staying under the covers and seeing if you can see dots beneath your closed eyes. But I have to write.

  5. kristiana says 'Cause my "top trusteds" are the shit. ;) Oh, I forgot to say - I always sleep in the nude. I mean, c'mon - pajamas? ;) And Okkervil River - I had never bothered with till I saw this video...

  6. Cody B says I believe everyone who posts on music oriented social networking sites sleeps in the nude, don't they? Where are the pajama people?

  9. dharmachris says mm, not sure about the Okervil Creek tunage,,, maybe it will grow on me like that Feist. The scene with your grandma is touching and vivid. I could almost taste the Bock. Alas, the sleeping scene is equally vivid, and I will be required to reconsider proposing a canoe camping trip. ;-)

  10. I am says *a canoe camping trip.* How fun would that be? With PJ's I mean, with PJ's. Just a quick in and out. Will get back later tonight.

  11. Jaguwar says Nice, Chris, these "not so Random Facts" make for good reading. You're a pretty decent writer, too. We'd planned on living in the country, but then life threw us a curve ball and all we have is the and, no house. :( Maybe some day. Preferably soon. Thanks for sharing, please keep doing it!

  13. I am says Charley - Thanks a million. Horses are a joy and a hassle at the same time. When you find yourself think one way or another, it's either time to get out or time to go all in. kris - I think I promised you a tale about my grandma and beer. You were the one I thought of when I wrote that. Harness racing and betting on the ponies is a secert love of mine. I give myself 20 bucks and when that's gone I quit. Gambling is not really a problem for me. *Her father told her that when looking for a partner, they should love children and animals and be good with both. If not, there's something wrong with the picture, I suppose.* Those are words to live by. I never had a problem with not knowing my real dad. It wasn't an issue at all. Still isn't, my step dad is great. I may have felt hurt at some point in my life, but that is water under the bridge. Cody - Nothing but my normal ups and downs. Or did you mean it a broader MOG sense. Lately though I have been feeling a strong urge to get things out there so you may know me better. Faith - Your to kind. I'll wager you had some doozeys of the coast. When I was in the service I remember you could see the line of rain and the localized wind reek havoc on the water and all the while you were safe and dry not more than a half a mile away. kris again - Now you piqued my interest. Always? Great song BTW. Cody again - Are there any PJ people at all? That might be a good topic for another post. Scotty - Thanks man. I got something in the works, stay tuned. Chris - Honestly that Bock was sub par. To malty for my taste. Grammy sure liked it. Have you ever tasted Schmidt's? I swear it has this unfiltered Schuylkill water flavor to it. Jag - you have become one of my favorite people as of late. Are you trying to get into the swing of things or were you a 'lurker' here on MOG. Thanks for the compliment. That keeps me going. Adam - That is my goal. Know me so I may know you. There is more on the horizon.

  14. bagelradio says Okkervil River "Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe" fun fact: the band were preparing to perform on Late Night With Conan O'Brien and discovered that one of Conan's other guests that night was actor Jeff Goldbloom. Okkervil River thought it would be approproiate if they changed the lyrics to "Our Life" to include bad Jeff Goldbloom movies, but the idea was nixed by someone involved with the show. Will Sheff tried to sing us the Jeff Goldbloom verse at the Independent in San Francisco last September, it was pretty funny:
