Not So Random Facts ........

Posted about 1 year ago
I was born on June 5th in 1969. The details of my first 6 years are spotty. Without doing the math, the things that stand out are;I liked spinach. Spinach with red wine vinegar and oil. I consumed lots of it. The 2 peony bushes in my front yard. I am color blind, so I will guess they were some sort of supernatural blue. A blue that pops and says "Howdy". If your not schooled on the peony bush here's a neat fact that will blow away all of your non-peony bush friends. The peony flower starts out as a dense ball on a stalk. Like a fruit it will ripen and start to give off this sweet sugary smell. This smell attracts ants like crazy. As the ants ( be it black, brown, German, or Fire) start looking for more of this sugar they begin digging into the ball. Slowly the ants start to peel off petals of the flower. Over time (say a week) the flowers only mechanism to bloom is whatever ants it could attract. I liked the fact nature slowed down enough for me to see her work. My grandfather fashioned sticks he had found into a barrier around the 2 peonies to keep him from mowing too close. We had to live close to the poverty line for the early 70's. By no stretch of the imagination could we be considered middle class. My grandfather worked, my mom worked, and my grandmother picked up part time shifts when possible. Hunting season meant meat till spring with deer hunting bringing the biggest haul. Around the farm guns were considered tools in the tool box. And once in a while the tools can be played with, under supervision at first. After some time being supervised when handling a gun, I was allowed to use one on my own. I still have my first gun, it's a 9 shot pump action .22 cal. One of the best squirrel guns in the right hands of course. Ground hogs, pigeons, crow, doves, and other vermin that live on a farm. Besides the vermin, we ate what I hunted. Ground hogs and squirrel are easy to prepare compared to birds and fowl in general. I had alot of freedom. If I ran in any direction for 4-5 miles I would see 4 kids my age, tops. The Rumfield girls and the Haas kids, Woody and Sue. In late summer when the corn was high, forget about it, I couldn't even see another house from my front porch. I had chores in the summer, as well as all year long, so once I did them I was free to do what ever as long as I was home by 4:30. More chores in the afternoon. Well that's all I got patience for. Get down with Melba. Where's Danny when you need him?

  9. Cody B says Your kickin' it pretty urban for a farm raised kid..Cool little reminisce. I understand the validity of guns in the country setting, but in the city there are just too many ricochets and rifles are really not a necessity. Has that Supreme Court case about gun laws in DC wrapped up?

  10. annieander says Interesting background. It sounds very much like the book "Where the Red Fern Grows". So what are your views about guns with your kids now? Are they trained, like you were, in gun safety? Could you let them "kill your meal"? Are you still a hunter? I didn't grow up in such a rural area, but my grandfather made his own guns, my dad still owns quite a few, I was taught to shoot a rifle and gun safety by the age of 10. We don't have guns around the house now, but my boy is darn fixated by them. I am struggling to get him the same type of training I did. By the way, you are older then me by only 4 months.

  11. I am says Cody, My guess is The Supreme Court will uphold the 2nd Amendment. No ruling as of yet. I agree with you to a point. I think guns as protection in the city are valid. I myself won't carry one, but I can see why people would want the extra protection if they choose to. Annie, I will have to get back to you. Lunchtime break is over.

  12. fistula spume says Sweet peony facts dude. That Melba Moore song rules. I had an opposite upbringing. I was one of the richest kids in town as a child and then I was among the poorest. Now I'm working on staying middle class and my family is doing a-ok. As far as guns go I don't like them but I grew up with them and all of my relatives lived way out in the middle of nowhere and depended on them. My grandparents didn't have proper plumbing until the late 80's and got a lot of water from a spring that was 2 miles away. I have to say my mom's mom made some pretty tasty squirrel dumplings. The thing with guns that I wouldn't mind so much is if people just would shoot people. I'd be alright with them if they didn't do that.

  14. Sturgell says my first gun was a sweet little 22 as well. Going deer hunting with that thing is pointles so later I got a 3030 lever action. I love that gun. I miss my guns. I've been living in the city for about 10 years now and I think having a gun is a bad idea. Not even a handgun. Things happen, people come over and it's just not a good idea, methinks. This post was drips with nostalgia, but when I got the bottom and saw the old player, it started to pour it.

  16. I am says annie - *So what are your views about guns with your kids now? Are they trained, like you were, in gun safety? Could you let them "kill your meal"? Are you still a hunter?* I want my kids to shoot. If nothing else, just to get a feel for it. As for training, that is why I send them to Uncle Bob in the summer. He taught me and I want 'him' to teach them. Maybe, never thought about it really, I think my kids would feel sick if they killed anything. Different time and place, if you get my drift. And no I don't hunt. I killed 1 deer in my life and that is where the hunting stopped. I am a fisher now. Sam - Why doesn't this surprise me. People killing people is a point which keeps me from going all out for gun rights. Glad you liked the peony facts and Melba. Do your grandparents live in AR? van - Thanks. I appreciate the thought. Adam - I don't know why but I never picked you to be a gun owner. A 3030, funny story about that cal. My grandfather had a lever action, but it was prone to jamming. For some reason the cartridge never fully ejected. Anyway one deer season Pappy was trying to free a round before we broke for lunch. There he is wrestling with this gun till he finally took off one of his gloves and put it on the ground. He then rested the barrel on the glove and started to put some weight on the lever. Suddenly, BLAM! the gun went off and blew a nice sized hole in his warmest glove. That shot nearly gave him a heartattack. Cody - You think so too. Ray - Venison tastes better processed or in a dish, like stew. Deer steak isn't my favorite, but deer jerky is.

  19. fistula spume says My mom's parents live in southwest Missouri. There's a lot of nothing but farms around where they lived. That side of the family is pretty redneck in all sorts of ways. I grew up in what they called the big city which then had 19,000 people in it. I'm high falootin in case you didn't know.

  20. I am says Annie check with your local gun club. They have hunter safety courses. Even if Stan doesn't want to hunt it will give him a great beginning to gun safety. If I am not mistaken your in Alameda or there abouts. I looked up your local and there was over a 100 hits. Contact them if your inclined. I went through one and my local club. They get to shoot .22's mostly. Yes it is law. A Constitutional Amendment even. It is covered under the little known 28th Amendment. "If you don't have an Uncle Bob, one will be provided for you." Sam - A city mouse. That's funny.

  21. dharmachris says Sweet post, Chris. Reminded me of my grandfather, who taught my brother and I to shoot and fish and golf. Every time I escape to the woods I think of him. I've never hunted, but fired various firearms with him and then in the service, all to learn that I am absolutely positively the worst shot ever. (Must be why I was given a machine gun.) When we went to Cabela's we did the kiddie air rifle range and my wife hit everything; me, I plonked down 2 little cans or something. Her dad was into shooting clays, and was a pretty good shot, so when she was at Penn State she took the gun safety class and took great pride in shooting better than most of the guys in there. But beyond that, I'm not sure I could hunt unless it meant meat on the table for my family. and your peony knowledge knows no peer. But seriously, can someone explain to me why the NRA opposed the right of individual municipalities in PA to make some gun control laws, ie, requiring owners to report lost or stolen guns, etc.? The PA assembly recently voted down this bill, even though it had the support of police and governments across the commonwealth. ?

  22. Sturgell says mine was a Winchester 3030. Oh sure it would jam sometimes, but mostly when you were blastin them away. I didn;t even get into the shotguns... but every redblooded boy has a shotgun handy, now doesn't he?
