Motivation ....

Posted about 1 year ago
I don't know if any one has told you guys, but the online magazine "subter":http://www.subter.com/ is no more. Bradley (aka "Known Human":http://mog.com/Known_Human) closed up shop just after the New Year. Brad, when you see this, understand I appreciate the offer. Really. To everyone else: The 'offer' I am writing about is the invitation to write for subter. Long story short is Brad had asked me to be the political writer (or politicized writer, I'm not sure which) to replace "David Bird":http://www.subter.com/is/?p=77 (this article is one of many that are if nothing else, well written). I can see why Brad wanted me to be a counter to Dave. Just being asked is what I enjoyed the most. Sorry, forgot the track.

Impressions on Cowboy Mouth? What did you think?Gotta be honest, this record is seldom played round my house. It gets dug up once in a while and then buried again for another 3 years.I think they are from Masshole. I mean Massachusetts.I was talking about motivation. One of the few requirements subter had concerning output or copy, was 1000 words for a feature article and 800 or so for a column. I thought, Holy Shit! now I got a deadline. How am I to come up with ideas on a deadline? You guys are smart enough, you know where this is going. Here I am. My application for 'Nomination papers' has been accepted. I applied for both President and Congress papers. I really think Prez is going to be a, 'no deal'. But Congress is looking better. The election is in 2010. 2 years to come up with a campaign to blow 'Dean' outta of the water. Suffice to say, what started out as a chicken shit way to generate news turned out to be news worthy after all. I am amassing a good bit of info and the bonus, it's mostly public record. I can't make this stuff up. I guess if I am going to ask for volunteers, you guys should know what I am asking. I need signatures from registered voters in Pennsylvania. And I can't stress this enough .......*By signing the nomination papers, is in no way a committed vote for me.* Come Nov. 4th you are free to choose who you want. By signing, you are acknowledging my right to be printed on the ballot. That's it. I know this goes without saying, please keep the ideas, pick ups, and put downs, coming. Ty, I am going to take you up on the offer for something visual. And are you familiar with RAW magazine? Here is a bit of a story tease;Did you know Pennsylvania still chooses "lots" to determine ballot placement? Somehow that seems 100% fair and archaic at the same time.

  1. zarpex says Never heard of ??subter?? magazine, but I expect it was gratifying to be offered the job... Cowboy Mouth always seemed to do everything wrong, right down the line, if you ask me. I'll never understand how they achieved the degree of recognition they did. I'd no idea they were from Massachusetts, but I think you just lost 12 electoral votes either way with "Masshole." I didn't know Pennsylvania chose ballot placement by lots, but the Electoral College is both archaic ??and?? unfair, and of vastly greater practical consequence. There's a subject for a political writer...

  2. TylerDurden says Wasn't that the 'once a year' magazine that featured like different cartoonist and short story author's and stuff like that???? Chris, not sure if the TY you were reffering to me, but if I am, I need more specifics Cong. Heilman.

  3. contrabandwidth says The other Tyler, here. Or just refer to me as Tyler? in the future. If you speak of Speigelman's indie/underground comic ??Raw??, then yes. I also have extensive reprints/knowledge of lots of the granddaddy's of the underground comics movement. Let me know, and since it would be a labor of love, it's good to have some time to work out the ideas now (being that my time is limited), that I expand upon later. What was it Oppenheimer said about the technical sweetness of working on the atom bomb? I know were not always eye to eye on every issue, but I do love your posts and respect your opinion greatly. I'm a born Pensive-anian, but a carpet bagger now. I'd do this just to see some interesting things done with election posters, stickers etc. What do the kids call it now-a-days, "branding a candidate"? Oh this could be fun....

  6. I am says zarpex, don't get me started on Electoral colleges. Masshole comes from the bottom of my heart. It is where I summer vacation. Well that and Disney. Truthfully, I had no idea Cowboy Mouth even had recognition. Tyler D. sorry about the mix up. I should have said contra. Thanks anyway. contra, That's the one. Right now I am looking for this 'noir' style comic that appear in one of the issues. Your "Cane" got my wheels turning. Mogmail me questions so we can get on the same page. *I know were not always eye to eye on every issue, but I do love your posts and respect your opinion greatly* Right back at ya, verbatim. Cody B. out of retirement for the second time. Choice words from the student wordsmith. Are you saying I don't look good now?

  7. contrabandwidth says I'd have to do a little research, but I'm sure I can find what your looking for. Did you know speigelman is now the art director for The New Yorker? Crazy world huh?

  8. annnna says Wow. If I was a registered voter and lived in Pennsylvania, I would sign. Good luck. I have learned that the incumbents win around 85% of the time though, they are hard to beat.

  9. Groon says Cowboy Mouth is from New Orleans. Just my 2 cents!

  10. I am says Shows how much I know. Thanks Chuck. Annna, Thanks, I am not trying to beat, I am just trying to get my name printed on the ballot. I don't have to get signatures for the write in portion. If I want to appear on the ballot I have to get roughly 2% of the total for the winning party. At first I was under the impression this was going to be 2000 sigs. After talking to the election boards I found up this number will quite a bit higher (I have resigned myself to not make it). Since I have my application in all I can do right now is wait until Penna State Dept. releases the requirements. They should be doing this soon. before the end of Jan. At that time the Election Board will send me my nomination papers and then I start to collect sigs. Officially I can't start to get sigs. until Feb 13th. August 1st is my deadline to get the sigs. and my filing fee and final paperwork to the Election Board and to the Federal Commission for Campaign Finance. There is alot of info not written, so I have to ask for everything. There is a great disparity between the requirements for the Rep/Dems and Independents. Penna. makes it easier for the 2 parties and really difficult for Independents. If I was to venture a guess I would say that this is because of nominations for Rep/Dems are given at the respective national conventions. Through the Primary system the major parties are vetted de facto by registered voters. Independents aren't afforded this luxury. That's 15% worth of hope. And this is why I am looking towards 2010 for a real Congressional bid in my district. Rep. Charlie Dent will likely be my opponent. He is the incumbent so I have to work hard to get the word out. I just realized the tab for this post says "I am Motivation".

  11. I am says contra, I guess this means John (Zenpop) has had conversations with him. Speigelman, knows the graphic language like no other.

  12. Groon says You might have been asked this before, but I'm too lazy to read . . . have you considered talking to a local third party to see if they'd be interested in "having" you?

  13. I am says I have thought that. The Prez bid is a DIY thing for now. But I have to solidify my ideals before approaching ...... wait for it ..... the Libertarian Party. There are also a bunch of groups here in Pennsy that help 3rd party and Independents. I will be seeking their help for 2010. What I am afraid of is a minor MOG purge of some of my more, let's say personally revealing posts. At some point I will be under someone's microscope. Don't want this but I may have to sacrifice some of my best writing and some of the best comments ever.

  14. Groon says I was wondering about your MOG writings. I've always felt that if a candidate is open and up front from the very beginning things like that usually tend to amount to nothing. It's when things are covered up that they become skeletons. Having said that, there are "delete" buttons! :-) . . . and, as a member of the LP, I was thinking that was the way you needed to go. Of course, there's that nasy "unelectable" stigma, but it's not insurmountable even on the Congressional level.

  15. Groon says grrr on the font change. Did my emoticon screw things up?
    Permalink posted 01/09/2008
  16. I am says Yeah, it did, I assume you said that is the way I should go.
    Permalink posted 01/09/2008
  17. Groon says Yeah. But on second thought, as much as I hate to say it, sometimes a well run independent campaign can go farther than a campaign attached to a party that so many people write off from the very beginning.
