Shrub To Pocket Veto Defense Bill .......

Posted about 4 years ago
Recently (and I mean in the last 2 months) Congress finally got around to hammering out a comprehensive defense bill that will give the Pentagon about 700 billion (that's 300 billion shy of a trillion for the math challenged). Still the "Decider Guy" is going to let "H.R.2764 ":http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:HR02764:@@@D&summ2=m& (sorry 'bout the percent sign, don't know how to get rid of it) die a slow death.

The official White House line was;"*In a statement, Bush said the legislation 'would imperil billions of dollars of Iraqi assets at a crucial juncture in that nation's reconstruction efforts.'*":http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5j057jBReERcsF-FcZRSWe0h1gaXQD8TQOFK01
This is because Iraq's dough is in US banks. Iraq threatened to withdrawal all it's money if the bill passed as is. So I went and perused the bill and I thought these might be the real reasons for killing it;(Sec. 699M) Prohibits funds under this Act from being made available for Iraq.Directs the Secretary to report to the Committees respecting the government of Iraq's commitment to combating corruption.Prohibits appropriations for foreign operations and export financing from being made available for Iraq unless the Secretary certifies to the Committees that the Departments of State and Defense are providing the Committees with full access to programs in Iraq for oversight purposes.(Sec. 699P) Directs the President to submit to Congress a comprehensive nuclear threat reduction and security plan.(Sec. 639) Prohibits the use of funds for publicity or propaganda purposes within the United States that were not authorized before the enactment of this Act.
And the number one reason to kill a bill;(Sec. 648) Prohibits the obligation of certain funds to pay for: (1) alcoholic beverages; or (2) entertainment expenses for recreational activities.Seriously folks, US banks don't want to lose investment coin if they don't have to. Read the fine print, it speaks volumes.

  1. I am says *Sec. 639 - Prohibits the use of funds for publicity or propaganda purposes within the United States that were not authorized before the enactment of this Act.* This freaks me out. Not surprising though.

  3. TroyPowers says Personally, I also wouldn't pass a bill that wouldn't let me spend the money on liquor and whores. What else is a guy to do with 700 billion dollars?

  6. I am says Thanks for putting the whole thing in to perspective for me, Troy. That's alot of wine and women. As a red blooded American, I feel it is my duty to promote liquor and whores where ever I go.

  7. deadmandeadman says Hi Chris, Just wanted to let you know I read your stuff even when I don't comment. I sure wish I'd gotten into the debate you had (Or rather discussion you lead), concerning the teaching of "intelligent design" in schools. I had a pocket full of fireworks. LOL

  8. Spike says deadman, I missed it also, but maybe there'll be another opportunity. I am, thanks for digging out the fine print. It revealed to me that the Democrats are thinking and manoeuvring adroitly for a change.

  10. contrabandwidth says Does anyone see this 1 trillion that's needed, that 'would imperil billions of dollars of Iraqi assets at a crucial juncture in that nation's reconstruction efforts.' kind of like some one trying to float that second house during this sub prime disaster. He's telling us that we really need this second house, we'll profit from it eventually, but really we need to just get rid of it and focus the money on the interest payments of our own house. Am I reaching? It just feels like such a smack in the face of everything Americans work so hard for that the money goes to build other countries infrastructures while our way of life is crumbling. On another note, Osama Bin Ladin is dead. So what were we fighting for again? If this interview with Benazir Bhutto from Nov. 2. doesn't send chills down your spine, I don't know what will. It was amazing how the last tape Osama dropped, he was actually younger than the previous tapes. I mean everyones doing botox these days, but...

  12. contrabandwidth says David Frost the press, Aired on November 2nd 2007, which I believe is on BBC. Any UK moggers correct me on this one? I know there's clips on YouTube that just have the interview straight too, minus the added commentary.
