Thanks, So Where Are Ya Calling From? .....

Posted about 1 year ago
One of my favorite Christmas stories revolves around the time I had to do a late night shift at "WMUH":http://www.muhlenberg.edu/cultural/wmuh/ .As a DJ we had to cover our own shows or find a replacement to do them for us, and one year nobody was going to take my 2am to 6am Christmas Day slot. The night started like any other show night, I had my smokes a gallon of wine and 2 crates to go through with a bit of holiday music to fill the already crowded airways with.

If you have ever been a DJ late at night or early in the morning you know that there isn't a whole lot of love coming back to you by way of requests, most of the phone calls are either wrong numbers or folks asking for the title of a song. That's about it, your sort of alone for that time. Anyway, I played the track your probably listening to right now. It had ended and my holiday set went on with the Waiteresses (in my estimation, still one of the best Christmas songs of all time), Tony Bennett, J. Cash, and some others I can't remember. Then the phone rang. On the other end was a cat who called to tell me he now had a new favorite Christmas song. Being a late night conversation I thought nothing about chatting this cat up about the virtue of Fishbone and their quickly forgotten EP "It's A Wonderful Life" which was released the year before. We talked about about all sorts of music, with a bunch of "Did you ever"s and "How about"s tossed around with a generous dose of "Hold a minute, I got to cue."We talked and talked for about 45 minutes when I finally asked "So, Where are ya calling from?"As it turned out he was the main switchboard operator for the 911 call center for the Lehigh Valley. My first thought was, "Who's answering the emergency calls while we were talking?" and I asked him the question. "Nobody, I'm the only one." Hope you all have a safe and happy Christmas. God willing you have no emergencies that need to be addressed late at night this holiday season. I will see you on the flip side of the 25th.
