Well Since You Asked ....

Posted about 2 years ago
While I am not a older Mogger, I have only been here since March of this year, I still get Mogmails asking me questions outside the public forum. Sometimes it's tech questions such as "How did you do that?" and style or content questions like, "What do you think about this/ have you heard/ I can't believe you posted that, Why?"I have even got Mogmails from folks who signed on to MOG just to comment on a post and one time an outsider even asked me to change my content because of the wording. Every so often I will get a request to play something (I like these the best), come to think about it that's how I hooked up with Girlcrawl way back in the day, after she had "crawled" my music collection. But my single most asked questions are about my avatars.

This was one of the questions contrabandwidth (aka Tyler) had asked on my last post. *"I just want to know what possessed you to get the Scott McCloud (Zot, Understanding Comics) avatar? I'm always curious in peoples motivations behind their Avy's."*Well Tyler, simply because I like the expression and the fact Scott has glasses. I wear glasses to correct my notoriously bad eyesight. Plus I am a huge fan of his, even got a link to his site in the "Ephemera" section of my page. I am a media junkie. I watch alot of DVD's and avi's, most of it animated material ie. Futurama, Venture Bros, Harvey Birdman, Samurai Jack, Speed Racer (all time fave) and the list could go on and on. While I watch these things on my computer (I have a large monitor made for graphics)I look for stills I can capture and toss up as an avatar. My motivation for changing them once in awhile stems from my mood. For example;

I use this one when I feel like a geek. Really, this was me in Jr. High.

I like to use this one when I post something political or strongly opinionated. I know you guys think "WTF Chris."

This is my mean face. It's a capture of Kon from Bleach. I like to use this one when I feel hostile, as in Mog Wars.

I like to use this one when I don't want folks to feel threatened or intimidated by me. Sherman first appeared when I did a post about something the Pope said, I didn't want people to shy away from commenting with their opinion. I use the Peabody avatar for the same reason.
I got 36 avatars that suit just about every mood and feeling I wish to convey. When I change my pic it is like a window into my feelings and sometimes it's how I want readers to perceive my tone when going into a post.I hope that helps. Keep them questions coming. I don't mind one bit.Thanks for taking an interest.

  1. Groon says I like the Peabody one the best. It just makes me smile . . . Have to say you put a lot more thought into it then I do. I went with random pics of me for awhile, and now I'm just sort of picking out random pop culture references that I like (Dr. Who, Douglas Adams, etc).

  3. AA Coppertop says I'd more or less sussed that you put more thought into your posts than the average bear, but I guess I didn't know the half of it. The Avengers tap into a nice early Who vibe without making a big hairy deal about it. I love the lack of affectation in the vocals; vocal affectation is my top turn-off when I press play on a MOG mp3. Or maybe I mean overweening vocals; Bowie and Ferry and Mercury are plenty affected, but with style and imagination. Hard for me to tell for sure from the mp3, but do the Avengers shoot for a deliberately low-tech sound? It seems so, and it seems nicely understated. Sounds like one-take-live, even if it isn't.

  4. I am says You know copper, I wish I could tell you. I think they had no other choice than low tech. This track was recorded when "tweed stack" meant something. Good call on the Who. I could see that. My guess is 3 mics, instruments, and a board to 4. Just pulling your leg. No really, I have no idea about this band. The Web has little to offer,.

  5. dermahrk says Well, Scott McCloud is a friggin' genius. Assume you've read "Understanding Comix" and its sequel. I sold my 10,000 comics collection a couple of years ago, but kept one box of things I couldn't part with, including McCloud's ZOT. Kudos.

  10. contrabandwidth says Well, thanks for answerin'! I love McCloud's work too myself. I just wondered seeing it if you were a fan or typed "I am" into Google images and pulled that up. But you inspired me, nonetheless to use a round Avatar with Mog's new white BG. Mine was actually a logo I designed for a theatre company I worked with for a short while. It's kind of a different take on the drama masks. Although I am really attached to my little red devil (that I stole/re-appropriated from the forgettable David Lee Roth album "A Little Aint Enough") I do believe it to be in the public domain, as I have looked for the origins of it and have found nothing. There is a longer story behind it too, but I kind of use it as an online trademark of sorts. So in case you were asking, that's my story, and Im sticking too it. P.S. Futurama and Venture Bros. rule. I'm looking forward to the new episodes coming out soon.

  11. I am says No prob, Ty. It was a good question. I am conscience enough to look for more iconographic avs because of Scotts take on identification with the style, hence my Sherman and Peabody, hell, you could apply it to alot of my pics. You familiar with his pyramid? I truly never thought of typing "I am" to search for images, but now you got me curious. Did you see "Bender's Big Score" yet? I haven't but I plan to soon.

  12. Hello Mimi says I feel like a dork for admitting it, but you're right about the Sherman and Peabody avs not being intimidating. Sherman is the first one I remember seeing you with and the one I always associate with you. I can't explain why internet communities freak me out, but they do and that's one of the reasons I don't talk much. I'm not like that in real life so I don't know why people on the internet that I don't know and will never meet scare me, they just do. So way to be not intimidating! And I too have really bad eyesight. =)
