The Fame Of Great Men Ought To Be Judged Always By The Means They Used To Acquire It.

If only he had made it, my life might have taken a different path. If you have no clue as to what I am talking about, Watch this.

September 8th 1974, I was 5 years old and all the boys I knew wanted to be Evel Knievel. Including myself.I remember watching "THE" stuntman do his daring tricks on TV from time to time. Usually for a world record. There was a feeling about watching history being made on live TV in such a way that was addictive. Of course we were warned not to try this at home, but back then seatbelts and car seats were practically non-existent and law suits weren't on the radar till the 80's, so who cared?Man, I bought into Evel big time. Lunchbox, posters, pillow cases, and one of my prized possessions, the X-2 Skycycle. Evel was my role model and I desperately wanted nothing more than to be like him. I couldn't count the scrapes and bruises I got from trying to jump all sorts of things on my bicycle all in the effort of emulating the hero of my childhood. So with a heavy heart I say goodbye to a dream I once had. The one of being a motorcycle stuntman. Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel died on November 30th 2007 from lung disease and I can't help but think, "What a way for this man to go."

  1. Dale says I remember being so upset because I wanted to see him jump the Snake River Gorge, and they wouldn't show it. I just couldn't understand it. Of course, later I found out that he had failed, and just like that, the dream was shattered.

  2. I am says Dale, That jump was shown on the then infant, pay per view. Didn't you get to see it afterwards. Could be my kid glasses being on, but wasn't that jump a really big deal? Trying to be Evel Knievel in those days, I have to say, Thank goodness my man parts were not yet fully developed. Still hurt though.

  3. Cody B says I'm a couple of years older than you, but there was definitely a dream there,E was the man..I was old enough to be skeptical of the PPV and Snake River thing, though. The awesome thing to me were the "real" motorcycle jumps. He kinda invented the extreme sports generation,huh..

  5. HelenMarie says My hub was so sad about the news the other day and was kind of misty telling me about the passing of one of his childhood heros. That jump did seem a big deal, we were all talking about it the other night. Awesome song!!! My hub would love that too!!

  8. Girlcrawl says Cool Husker Du track. Must admit, I'm not terribly familiar with Evel Knievel but he seems as if he would have been a fun (or potentially limb damaging) 'childhood hero' to emulate. Cheers.
