  1. Dale says Just looking at the top 20, I think Arcade Fire is way too high, Joy Division is too low, and they used X's Wild Gift instead of Los Angeles?!? Other than that, it's not that bad a list.

  2. daedae says I can't /really/ comment because a lot of that stuff I haven't heard. A lot of what passes for indie today I end up hating because it generally seems like there's more to being "indie" than not being on a big label; there's this whole god-awful aesthetic to the sound. With that in mind, I'm surprised to see things like "Pretty Hate Machine" and "Bleach" on there, or even "Franz Ferdinand" and "White Blood Cells" for that matter (seeing as how those records got way too much radio/MTV play to be "truly indie"). If you accept that all four of those albums belong on there though, I can't buy FF being a better album than PHM... Maybe the magazine actually had a list of reasons instead of just a list of discs though and would describe it better...

  3. I am says Smashing Pumpkins – Gish (I thought Siamese was better) The Fall – 50,000 Fall Fans Can’t Be Wrong ( I would have picked "Palace" over this one) Mission Of Burma – Vs. ( I would have picked "Horrible" or "Forget") M.I.A. – Arular ( What is she doing here, way too high if on the list at all) Various Artists – No New York ( I am pleased to see this overlooked classic on the list) Dale I got to agree with you on all counts.

  4. Wade says For Palace, I think Lost Blues and Other Songs is their best and should have been included. Great Number 1 though: Slanted and Enchanted was groundbreaking and still great to this day. I also wonder where the Replacements "Tim" is, but I agree, a good list. It does seems like some are a little new to see how they will play out in the longer term. I mean I love Cat Power The Greatest, but will it have the same long term influence as the Smiths, X, Pavement, Minutemen, etc.? I hope so but who knows.

  8. Marigold says I saw this a few weeks ago on Stereogum and thought about posting it....but then I noticed the Stone Roses were not on the list. The list is shit. Gish is way better then Siamese Dream. (IMO)

  14. AA Coppertop says Brian Eno, Indie kid.

  15. AA Coppertop says The 13th Floor Elevators, Big Star, The Shaggs... "indie" stalwarts all. Is this actually a list of albums embraced by people who ALSO listen to "indie rock"? That would probably encompass every genre and artist on the planet if carried to its logical conclusion.

  16. zarpex says Certainly no "all-time greatest" list can possess any vestige of credibility unless I supervised its creation. Anthologies, of course, should not have been permitted (correcting for which puts, for example, ??This Nation's Saving Grace?? on the list instead of ??50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong??). There are numerous and glaring errors of omission and inclusion (Where's The Birthday Party? Where's ??Chairs Missing??? Who let Unrest in?). But the real problem, I think, is that the list should stop about the time it gets to #20, because the best indie albums are always the ones that the listener alone seems to have discovered.

  17. seo tool says A few more for your consideration: The Buzzcocks - Singles Going On Steady YLT - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One, And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out Stereolab - Emperor Tomato Ketchup, Dots And Loops The Replacements - Tim The Circle Jerks - Golden Shower of Hits (not so much for the music but for the title/cover art) Fishbone - Party At Ground Zero And so many more...
