YOU CAN'T NOT GET NO SATISFACTION

Have I Ever Told You Some Of ...........

Posted about 1 year ago
... many bizarre stories I have from my Navy days?Don't rightly know why this one popped into my head just now, but here it goes.*Turn down your volume and press play. Then turn up the volume until you can just hear the sound. Then read.*

I started in the service thinking I was going to be a Cryptologist. Along side of Radiomen, Cryptologist receive and decode communications from many places. As you can imagine, this job was under top secret classification rules, and as such my lousy bank account kept me from the job I had signed on for. So the Government gave me the next best thing, they made me a boatswain mate. If you don't already know boatswain is pronounced "bo'sun". Just one of the many quirks of the English language (ya taking notes there Mick. You'll have one up on your friends when they try to pronounce that one.) Well anyway us "deck apes" had a bunch of uninteresting jobs to do.
One of them was to "needle gun" the hull and superstucture. This just meant to chip off old paint so a fresh coat could be applied. Here's a pic of someone doing that job, mind you, I would be wearing the same get - up were I doing it:

Needle guns are these air powered, hand-held, jack hammers. They have around 30 steel pins (about twice the size of a coat hanger wire) bunched into a circle. They oscillate when you pull the trigger. When used to chip the 2 part epoxy paint from the side of a ship, they send up a shower, yes I mean shower of grey colored plastic into the air in front of you. The sound is really like a kinder and gentler jack hammer but it's beating against great big sheets of steel and aluminium. TATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATTATATAEven through the "monkey ears" you heard the noise. TATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATANow this is the bizarre part. Being so up close and personal with that needle gun actually put me to sleep. Guess my brain learned how to filter that drone and allowed me to nod off. I eventually learned how to sleep with a needle gun in my hand, which was great 'cause with the hours I kept shooting pool at "Mag's":http://www.magnoliasteak.com/, I could catch up on my rest later during working hours. Your tax dollars at work.I guess now is a good time for you to turn up the volume (if you can), and give a listen to what your really hearing. Then check out what my 2nd favorite band does with the idea.

  4. Jonh Ingham says In this strange and wonderful tale, the best part is that Mags lists "adult beverages". It makes a wine list sound positively erotic.

  5. soulrocket says it is amazing at how much we can get used to it. that story was great, chris. hey, jonh. i remember we talked about "bleach" the anime a few months ago. well, the blank ciccone youth track is played in bleach as a backing soundtrack mostly for combat situations, and it works quite well.

  6. I am says Bonus points for recognizing the sample Danny. I took about 2-3 seconds from Bleach and copied it until I had about 2 mins of sound. It's not Ciccone Youth though, I just tagged it as such for the track I put in comments. Jonh, Mags moved from being the steak and ale place I remember to an upscale restaurant. They still have the pool table though. Ah the time I spent there.

  8. annieander says The fact that you could work on autopilot, let alone rest, is astounding. I have a coasty friend who has often talked about being able to sleep while standing in the galley...I have never been put to that test.

  10. Max Load says I had a similar experience sitting at Chicago Union station a couple of weeks ago. The platforms announce themselves as you walk past. I had a while to wait and sat myself down just between the ends of tracks 8 and 9. Where I was sat I could the announcement from track 5 to track 13, which were all out of sync and blended together to give an effect not unlike this from Philip Glass. (But more rhythmically complex.) Maybe you need to be tired and hungry and sit there on a hard cold seat for about 45 minutes to get the full effect. Which is a bit like how Philip Glass makes more than a few people feel. I used to use this to send my daughter to sleep when she was little.

There is a Dutch composer whose name escapes me right now who did a thing that sounds just like the needle gun - but less soporific. One of the few bits of music I've actually had to turn off because it was disturbing me so much.

  11. Marigold says Thanks for the story. As a fellow veteran, I can relate to the times in which you should not be sleeping and you are.

  12. I am says Max, I can totally see why you would use this to put your daughter to sleep.

  13. ciphermedia says Having been a bit of a noise/drone/industrial music fan from way back (the very early eighties), I can actually appreciate these sounds, and find them quite soothing - like you obviously did!
